The earth being the center of the earth was never taught as infallible truth.

Mary was not an addition. Even Luther respected her. Her role was accepted by all until protestant revolt. The Church has split because of people wanting to change the unchangeable. As was stated, nothing dogmatic has changed.
This always puzzles me. On these forums, Luther is so often presented as the bad guy, the one who created all sorts of lies, changed things, went the wrong way…but when he agrees with Catholics, they whip him out to prove their point? Does anyone else see something…odd about that?

When the discussion is Catholicism, why pull out Luther at all?
He isn’t Catholic. What he believed isn’t the subject. And in the next post, or thread, he will again be used as an example of everything bad.

I mean, if Luther was so wrong about so many important things…maybe he got the thing about Mary wrong as well.

The point they are making is that even Luther, who was willing to re-invent the whole field of soteriology, did not overthrow the dogmas concerning the Holyl Trinity, and the dogmas concerning Our Lady are tied to that in a fundamental and unbreakable way. People are not saying that even somebody who was willing to trash the Sacraments knew better than to ditch these important points of the faith that are tied to the Incarnation.

People are also making the point that what most Protestants believe today is a far cry from what the original leaders of the movement held.

wikipedia is possibly one of the most unreliable sources for information available unfortunetally lots of people have to find this out the hard way. Luckily there are others available.

Surely in the entire history of the church there has been a backflip on something… maybe they just covered it up (like the US i would presume often does)… i just find it hard to belive that an institution of man can never have changed its mind in 2000 years…

Ahhh…there’s the problem. The Church is NOT an institution of man, it is the Bride of Christ (see Matthew Ch. 16 when Christ est. His Church ).

Doctrines of the faith do NOT change, while disciplines can.

The purpose of sexual intercouse in marriage is to be joyfully united with your spouse as you will one day be with Christ in heaven. It is the closest feel on earth to joy we will experience in heaven - it is a gift of insite into the eternal joy which awaits the faithfull! This act should be the most self-less act you can imagine. It is only natural the miracle of a child results from the this. Abstinance during one’s fertile phase requires sacfice, suffering, and selflessness - which in turn raises the dignity of sexual union. Until this is the lens through how we see sex, contraception seems like no big deal.
