A Question of the Orthodox

I’m asking assuming that the norm is Body and Blood given to the faithful on the gold spoon: what is the case if one of the faithful has Celliac Disease or is a 12 Step recovering alcoholic? Is it legit to have only one Specie AND, would a different gold spoon be used? Ta muchly for all charitable legit answers!

Hmmmm…33 views and save this, not a single post. Is it because you do not know or you cannot recall a single instance where somebody in the body of your Church suffered from either affliction…in which case, I would like to know that as well. OR, are you waiting until this Sunday to ask your Priest?

All receive the Most Holy Eucharist, Body and Blood together, on the same spoon.

If someone has a communicable disease, the flu or something, they are to refrain from receiving as is fitting for someone who loves his neighbor as himself. (Although I see plenty of kids with sniffles receive and have never heard about anyone getting sick from it).

Once a year on the Feast of St. James, when the Divine Liturgy of St. James is used, is the only time that the Body and Blood are given separately. Everyone receives both as there is no such thing as only receiving a part of Christ. In Orthodoxy everyone receives fully the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ.

Sorry. I’m a Latin Rite Catholic. I know that our parish uses special hosts for coeliacs. These hosts are not gluten free as, for use in the Mass, the hosts must be made from wheat. They are, however as gluten free as possible.Permission from the bishop has to be sought.

If we are a recovering alcoholic we just do not recieve the Blood. Either or is still the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Blessed Lord.

I failed to answer the question about 12 Step Alcoholic and I apologize. It makes no difference if one is an Alcoholic as long as he or she is struggling against that passion by various spiritual warfare techniques which includes going to confession his/her heart will be ready to receive our Lord.

Receiving the Most Holy Eucharist, which is the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, is one of the many things which will help aid that person in their struggle against addiction to alcohol (or any person struggling with any passion for that matter).

Oh, of course, Coeliacs are allergic to wheat! I should have recognized that term because one of my two priests has that condition: Fr. Tim.

Fr. Tim cannot eat any bread or pasta, etc. that has wheat as he could die from the adverse reaction; however, he has no adverse reaction to Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist. Neither has anyone else that I know of who have ever had that or a similar condition.

Jesus in the Holy Eucharist heals people of their ailments, He doesn’t hurt them…unless they receive unworthily - without the proper preparation.

I agree with your statement that “Jesus in the Holy Eucharist heals people of their ailments”, and I don’t doubt there have been cases where someone would be severely allergic to the unconcecrated bread or wine, but is able to receive the Eucharist without any problem at all. But I would not suggest to celiacs in general that they should just go ahead and receive the Eucharist without some kind accomadation to their condition. (Just like I wouldn’t tell someone with a serious communicable disease “Go ahead and receive. Because it’s the eucharist, no one will get your disease.”)

You are really recommending that Celiac’s receive the Eucharist? I only ask this because the Church does not recommend this. In fact, they offer alternatives. Such as receiving from the Cup or receiving a Low Gluten Host.

But from what I am reading here, as long as I have no mortal sin on my soul, you are telling me to receive and that not only will it not hurt me, it will heal me?
