A Question of Unity

Recently there was a beheading of an Orthodox Priest by Islamic miltants to protest a statement by the Pope. This should be a clarion call to us all that they consider all branches of Christianity the same. Perhaps now is the time for us to unite as Christians. Seperated by Doctrine,Rite, and Denomination but united as a whole. Schisms, and Reformations, should be acknowledged but relegated to the past. Something to learn but not to dwell on. Our very life is being threatened, perhaps if we unite they may learn that peace doesn’t have to come at the end of a sword. Perhaps a new beginning of peace between the Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants could give our enemies a moment to pause and think before they act so destructively.

I believe you are talking about a Syriac Orthodox bishop (whose name escapes me at the moment; possibly Syrian Catholic). Moslem militants demanded he repudiate the Pope’s quote from a Byzantine emperor.

Of course, their beheading of him proved that they were right and the Pope was wrong, didn’t it?

Seeing as the Orthodox don’t necessarily agree with the Roman See (Hence Orthodox) I doubt the priest would have refuted it. As for his death he died a martyr The militants who killed him are cowards and I doubt they will receive good news when they’re called for judgment. Killing a priest is never a wise idea.

There already is a unity you cite. We already work together to address common social concerns such as these. I would consider this merely a social bond. However, if you mean ecclesiastical unity or full communion with each other while holding to our irreconcilable beliefs, it cannot happen. A communion of this kind is false. We need to be of one mind in order to have a communion of this kind. A kingdom divided against itself will not stand.
