Ok, a friend asks me where did we come from? I read the bible and it says we all came from Adam and Eve. Then I take biology claims that we evolved from monkeys and apes. History claims our first ancestors were cave men. So how do I answer this question?

Both. There’s been several loooooong discussions in here on this topic. You can search for Adam/Eve in apologetics or the philosophy sections. The Catholic Answers tracts and the Akin article above are probably the best simple summary of this “problem.”

Another article that goes more in depth is based on one of those loooooong CA forum discussions:

Does Science Allow for a Literal Adam and Eve?

I picked the title for the article. However, it is all Dr. Bonnette’s work. Or you can try:

Adam, Eve, and the Hominid Fossil Record

Besides Catholic philosopher Dr. Bonnette’s book, there is another book that goes in depth with the Adam/Eve and evolution question from a Christian perspective, written by an Anglican:

Creation or Evolution: Do We Have to Choose? by Denis Alexander

I don’t have this book yet, but have flipped through it at the bookstore. It appears to contain a detailed attempt at an answer to the question (without denying the science, nor denying an historical Adam/Eve).

You and your friend should read the chapters on evolution in Ann Coulter’s Godless. Talk about a religion and junk science rolled into one!

The famed ‘Scopes Monkey Trial’ is not what common knowledge claims it is, any more than the Church is anti-science.

We’re just anti-BAD science. 😃

Which do you think most deserves your confidence: modern science or bronze age mythology?

I would not put my confidence in man, some of whom are committed to promoting an anti-theist ideology.

The Bible records the Original Sin of two real people. That is why Christ came into the world, lived, died and rose from the dead.

Ed

I read Godless. Miss Coulter is a media creation. She promotes a certain stereotype. As a provocateur, she makes vile comments to turn people’s heads in her direction. It is all designed to be that way. I found her use of ‘facts’ questionable, and, in some cases, wrong. It’s too bad that angry and vulgar defines a “new” version of TV celebrity. It lowers the level of public discourse to the gutter.

I do not always agree with you ed, but in this case you are right.

I love what the left fondly imagines ‘science’ to encompass: Look! We’re descended from monkeys! And to prove it, here’s the latest Missing Link!

Once your eyes have been opened, you can no longer be fooled by their pathetic drivel.

No, we are descended from apes. Monkeys have tails, apes do not. We do not have tails. By all means criticise evolution, but please criticise what evolution actually says, not what it doesn’t say.
And to prove it, here’s the latest Missing Link!
So where is your evidence of any alternative? This is science, the evidence wins. What evidence do you have to support the non-evolutionary origin of species?

Strictly speaking, we are not just descended from apes, we are apes.

Perhaps just looking up evolution in the Catholic encyclopedia would be useful for the religious perspective. If you want to read on the science of evolution, go to the science section of a bookstore or library.

Mark Perakh is a better scientist than Ann Coulter.
You could be right, (the article you pointed to was not written by Mark Perakh) but I’ll judge your opinion on this matter has being worth as much as Ann Coulter’s. You’re both non-scientists offering a layman’s perspective.
I’m just pointing to your double-standard since you used a newsgroup as your source rather than a scientific paper.
What part of the Talk Reason site do you find scientifically unreliable?
If you want to dismiss peer-review as a criteria for scientific reliability, then you shouldn’t use that as an argument against ID theorists.
Again, I’m just observing and noting the double-standard at use here when judging various matters.
