If we read the intire articule by Mr. Atkins. near the bottom the 3 from last line reads,
“Ultimately, the Code means what Rome says it means, and Rome confirmed On Penance and Abstinence, thus making it the law for Latin Catholics in the United States.” ( bolding mine) so even Mr. atkins say that since the US bishops have not difined an alternative The Universal law holds for all. In other words as every Sunday is a mini EASTER, Every friday is a mini Good Friday and the norm of abstinence from meat is inforce for all Latin Rite Catholics. Even in the USA.

Now I do see that this give the Bishops room that in their diocese they can give alternate penence, but Friday is still a day of penence and abstinence from meat is still the norm form prescribed.

Sorry not in the US.

and worse case it creates a doubt…in which case Canon Law (14) kicks in again:

*Laws, even invalidating and disqualifying ones, do not oblige when there is a doubt about the law. *

The law is clear. all fridays are a day of pence (even in the US) abstinenced from meat is tne norm unless and alternate is provided by you Bishop.

You can live in denial about it all you wish, that does not chang it. The only dought it may create is should i abstain form meat or something else. inwhich case you you abstain from meat as that is the Universal decree.

I am sorry if this conflict with what you have been lead to belive over the last few 10 to 20 years, You are not a lone, I to withb in the last 5 years dicovered that the need for friday penence and abstinave from meat had not be done away with. The thing is we have to be open to the truth whne it is shown to us.

I actually used to hold the position that you hold…I too tried to inform my friends etc that this was the Universal Law and that they had to follow it…

…but I was incorrect on the local part. It is the Universal Law but the Local Conference of Bishops has made it only recommended here…very much recommended of course (I still give up meat most Fridays…and if not I Pray a penance…) but it is not an obligation. In the USA that is.

What I stated is the law in the US confirmed by Rome.

One is not obliged on friday’s outside of Lent and Holy Week.

all the these say that fridays are day of penence. also unless your bishop ( most have not) has put forth a alternate to abstinence from meat. the Universal code of the church is in force. that the reasin for this giveing of a alternate was real how big of a sacrifice were catholic in coastal areas makeing abstaining from meat and eating fish and seafood.

In other words a Bishop in Maine may have said instead of abstaining from meat you would abstain from fish and seafood.

One needs to read his response’s …he said in the US we are not obliged.

Period.

He is is not only a Priest but is a Canon Lawyer

:banghead::banghead::banghead: nothing I have read show any Bishop saying its only strongly encouraged. Also canon law gives the bishops the leway to offer alternates not to do away with the obligation.

Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 01-28-2009:
In the United States, it is encouraged but not strictly required.

Like I said…I used to think as you do in this regards…even called up an very well known and orthodox moral theologian cause he said that we were not obligated on the other fridays…quoted the same things to him…

but it seems he was right…as Jimmy Akin explained…we are urged here (one could say very much so) in the USA but not obligated in conscience…

and even if one disagrees with all this…and with the Canon Lawyers (well it is their area is it not?) and the theologians etc…the fact remains that there is certainly doubt created in all this so as Jimmy explains canon 14 kicks in and one is …well again not obliged by Canon Law …this IS what Canon Law says for sure. No doubt there.

But again…I still observe giving up meat or at times I substitute something etc…

but *what I cannot *do is tell someone that they are obliged to do the same …

This is what the new Code of Canon Law brought out in 1983 says about the matter:

Canon 1251
Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Canon Law still requires that Catholics not eat meat on Fridays!

Of course, most Episcopal Conferences have determined that, instead of abstaining from meat, Catholics may perform an act of penance of their choosing. But, do you ever remember to abstain from a particular food or do some other penance on Fridays? And, at any rate, the main rule is still to abstain from meat on Fridays, the performance of another penance instead is an optional alternative.

cannon law still is to abstain for meat thought the US Bishops have given premission to do an alternate penence than abstinence.
Yea, when I was going through RCIA I looked this up. Even though I’ve had some tell me that we don’t have to, I have it in my calender every Friday to not have meat. I mess up sometimes, and when I do, I try to do some other sort of penance.

Regarding what happened with the OP, I would be thinking just like you had this happened to me.

Regardless of what some canonm lawyers and theologians may have said and as MR Jimmy Atkin has said ( if you read the entire articule) it is not you saying that US catholics are obligated it is the Church that says we are.
You have not given one Bishop saying otherwise. There is not confusion in the cannon law about this it is quite clear. Catholic are to abstain form meat on all fridays except solemnities. the Bishop may offer antlernate. what is confusing about that?🤷

Gentlepeople, I am truly not trying to be stupid or inattentive, however I do not understand. I have been doing some kind of penitential act on Friday instead of fasting from meat. This is partly since fasting from meat was once fasting from a delicacy, now meat is ubiquitous in the US. Partly is was that fasting from meat, often in social situations, was becoming “look at me, I’m fasting from meat, you aren’t, I’m a better Catholic than you”. So my questions are: does it have to be a food item that is fasted from, or can I fast from pleasure reading on Friday (for example) OR instead of fasting (in some form) can I substitute some other penitential work?

the norm is to abstain from meat. (beef, pork, chicken, etc…) In the US the Bishops have the abllity to make alternate penence availble. if you Bishop has not done so hen it is meat. if he has you can find out what that alternate is. if it is unclear stick to meat.

How do we find out if our Bishop has done this?
I think it’s just easier to abstain from meat myself, but I’m curious

Now there is the million dollar question. most bishops have not made a specifc alternate to abstaining from meat. on the diocese web page for my diocese is a link to write to the Bishop you could start there.

But I agree the eaiest thing is to follow the Universal normal of abstainece from meat. To my knowledge Arch Bishop Daniels has not put forth an alternate.

I’ll wait till he’s recovered more. I don’t want to bother him just yet.
Funny, around these parts you’re the only other Catholic I know that doesn’t eat meat on Fridays when it’s not Lent.
