I had always thought that the Old Covenant was void because of the New Covenant, although granted, some things still do apply to Christians from the Old Testament. I came across this statement in an answer today:
The Old Testament is an indispensable part of Sacred Scripture. Its books are divinely inspired and retain a permanent value, for the Old Covenant has never been revoked.

My ? was regarding the part I emphasized;

The Old Covenant was not made null and void by the New Covenant?

It seems that is the case but I had understood otherwise, granted I was looking w/ “Protestant lenses.”

The Old Covenant was not made null and void by the New Covenant?
No. Jesus explained it this way:
Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. (Matt 5:17)
(by “the law or the prophets” Jesus refers to the old Covenant).

The Covenant is like the Church. Jesus did not abolish the Jewish Church - he fulfilled and completed it in the Catholic Church (which was what the Jewish Church was always to become in God’s plan).

I believe it was St. Augustine that stated that the New Testament (Covenant) is hidden in the Old and the Old Testament (Covenant) is revealed in the New.

While the Old Covenant was fulfilled by Christ, it provides a much needed reference to the New Covenant. If the Old Covenant is the seed, the New Covenant is the flower - we cannot separate the two.

I’ve seen some well intentioned, self-proclaimed, “New Testament” churches go totally heretical simply because they did not refer to the Old Testament. For example, the Old Covenant Passover Seder meal provides a clear reference on how we should view and exercise the New Covenant Communion meal. Just as the Old Testament Jews believed that they were sharing in the original slavery and exodus from Eqypt, We believe that we are sharing in the tangible body and blood of Jesus as He indicated at the Last Supper.

Another example: just as Adam’s side was pierced and Eve (his wife) was born from it, Christ’s side was pierced and the church (bride of Christ) was born from it.

In order to gain a clearer understanding of the New Testanment, the Old Testament is not only recommended reading, it is required.
