Not just non-American countries! Jewish communities still do this. Maybe we should bring this back.

While the divorce rates were lower for many reasons, I don’t think this necessarily brought about happier marriages.

Frankly, it sounds like a nightmare to me. Someone else choosing my spouse is the ultimate in micromanaging my life.

That is a big part of the dilemma. On the one hand, people in the past dealt with a lot more interference in choice of spouse than we do. On the other hand, they got more help.
