ITS STUPID BECAUSE ITS OBVIOUS—OBVIOUSLY GOD COULD COMMAND YOU TO KILL SOMEONE IF THE CAUSE WAS JUST–LIKE CAPITAL PUNISHMENT OR SELF DEFENSE–BUT THE QUESTION IMPLIES THAT GOD WOULD ASK YOU TO DO SOMETHING UNJUST(KILL)–WHICH OBVIOUSLY GOD CANT DO–GOD CANT ASK YOU TO DO SOMETHING THAT IS UNJUST–JUST LIKE THE POPE CANT CHANGE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS—YES ITS STUPID BECAUSE ITS OBVIOUS–ITS LIKE ASKING WHAT IF THE POPE ISSUED A DECREE CHANGING THE 5TH COMMNADENT
First of all, you didn’t include enought ALL CAPS

Now, with that out of the way, the question isn’t implying anything, it is simply a hypotetical asking on how you would respond if it happened. If you find the question stupid, something I doubt but rather consider that you find it either offensive or threatening, then please refrain from posting and let others who find the question interesting participate.

Thanks.

the question does imply that—because if it doesnt then there is no need to ask it–because its clear that God, in some cases, permits killing. self defense, capital punishment-- just war theory–etc etc—so if your asking about those things the case has already been dealt with–it must implY an unjust killing–which God cant do and everyone knows that— so to me its STUPID!!!

My answer is absolutely not, because I do know God’s commandments and I know that killing is forbidden. God would not command me to break his own laws. I would determine that this sort of “order” has come from elsewhere, not from God. End of discussion.

Greetings,

I normaly visit an atheist board and sometimes a question addressed to Christians is this:

“If God told you to kill someone would you do it?”

as Catholics we do not relly on personal revelation so the question can be changed to say:

“If the Pope or The Church commanded you to go and kill, would you do it?”

bear in mind that there are serveral occasions in which God, in the Old Testament commands his people to kill others. Knowing this, what would be your response to the question?
No. I would immediately commit myself to the local insane asylum, though. Be very careful about drawing absolute conclusions from certain scriptural passages. This is one of the dangers of private interpretation and reliance upon “sola scriptura.” Read these passages in their proper context. Just because Abraham was willing to sacrifice Isaac does not mean that we should go out and immolate our sons or daughters. And by the way Catholics are not obligated to obey what the “Pope” or “The Church” “commands.” Such is the typical evangelical misunderstanding and caricature of Catholicism.

The Pope told the crusaders to kill.
There was on ongoing war at that time. The Pope sent soldiers to free the Eastern Church and Holy Land from the Saracens. There is a clear difference.

The question “if the pope commanded you to kill, would you do it” carries an implication of directly killing innocents without any justification. That type of question uses the fallacy of a false premise, and is ignorant (not stupid) since it has an invalid premise.

Also, wasn’t crusading voluntary? I mean, I’m aware that graces and indulgences were attached to it for encouragement, but was anyone actually compelled to crusade?

So then, does that means that you would do it because if The Church commanded you to kill it is just. Did I read you right?

Who died and made you the forum admin?

Please try to offer a more substantial post than the criticism of other posts.

No, no one was compelled to crusade.
The Crusades was a “just war”. Christians were being attacked by Muslim forces. Muslims were the aggressors here. Muslims were strategically taking over the world with the purpose of converting Christians (infidels) to the Muslim faith. They took the Holy Land and turned it into a Muslim stronghold. Look at Jerusalem now - the Dome of the Rock is there - not the Temple!

It was the nobels and princes with their “forces” that answered the call of the Pope and they did so at their own expense. That’s why it was mostly nobles and princes - they could afford it. It was not financed by the Pope. The Pope asked for help with protecting Christians and taking back their territory. Those involved wanted to to do this for God

Granted, there were atrocities that happened but they were in no way sanctioned by the Church. These warriors were away from home for years at a time fighting Muslims. I’m sure frustrations and anger ran high and a feeling of futility at times. Let me repeat, the Church in no way ever sanctioned any of these atrocities.

The question being asked has no resemblance whatsoever to the Crusades. The two cannot be compared.

If the pope commands you to kill then you reject it. The pope is not exempt from sin. He is just given authority over the Church. If he is telling you to do something you know is immoral then you must reject it.

I think a limited amount of scripture should be required before speaking here…

If we learn NOTHING else from JESUS, we should learn this:

SIRACH 15:11 Say not: “It was God’s doing that I fell away”; for what he hates he does not do. :irish2:

The Crusades are a little bit of a different situation. The pope did not start the war. The war had been going on for years and the muslims had been taking over Christian cities in the east. The pope asked troops to go to defend the Church of God.

If the pope just tells all Catholics go and fight then it is for you to discern whether you should do it. If he is just acting in a manner to say go kill, then I would reject. If the Church is under attack, then I would fight.

I don’t think Asimis gets it.
