Is a ‘nod’ of the head equivalent of a ‘yes’ answer?
Thanks. I noticed in the referenced material of the link there was no explict traditional reason that is unique, or in any way derived exclusively from Catholicsm or any other form of Christianity. I mean, it looks like all babies would behave that way, not only Christian babies.Michael quite often that is so, however words are more explicit.

Sounds like what you are saying is that the ‘bow’ and ‘the little bow’ is Christian but the nod is not. This exchange of thoughts with you is giving me the idea that the nod is actually a deceptive yes, hence a possible lie depending on how it is taken by the person seeing it and interpreting it in the context of his conversation. Some of the german philosophers have suggested that we need to speak directly to God in all our interactions with people. The understanding I get from that is that we never attempt to lie, for we cannot lie to God whom we are attempting to see and hear in all things. So if someone says something that is sinful, say, abuses or insults me or otherwise asks me a question I cannot answer truthfully for some emergent reason (like a threat to my life if I say the wrong thing); I always have in those situations the option of nodding/little bowing - in which case I call upon their respect for the lord. For if I see their action as sinful, I acknowledge with the little bow/nod that the lord was the bearer of our sins (and hence am not lying) and it is only their sinfulness and lust for power over me that makes them think I agreed with them, or acknowledged them lord?A nod and a bow actually come from different intentions.
If someone bows the head at the name of Jesus, (or in a similar religious connotation)
the meaning of the little bow (which could be mistaken as a nod by someone unfamiliar with the custom ) is to honor the Lord. It isn’t ‘yes’, but signifies respect and honor.
Let’s say the person is in trouble. What is the difference between the responses of a man and a woman in that case. I’ve noticed that women, when feigning fear, often shake their heads “no”. Please elaborate. This depends is this from a man or a woman and are you in trouble?![]()
You missed the little emoticon with the tongue sticking out - my response was meant in jest and humor.Let’s say the person is in trouble. A nod’s as good as a wink to a blind horse.Michael quite often that is so, however words are more explicit.

In the Book of Job, Job nodded about a posed argument. His friends asked him to explain what the ‘nod’ gesture meant to him. So, ‘nodding’ may not say either yes or no.A nod may signify anything from concurrence to deference to impatience to somnolence!

So a nod may signify anything from concurrence to deference to impatience to somnolence to indifference to incompetence to insolence to nescience to innocence to intransigence to unintelligence.................
I guess. :yup:So a nod may signify anything from concurrence to deference to impatience to somnolence to indifference to incompetence to insolence to nescience to innocence to intransigence to unintelligence…
In short a nod may signify anything whatsoever!![]()
Maybe because when you are running with the world (paralell to the ground) you aren’t on the right path to Heaven (straight up). Only when you are running with God (vertically) will you manage to climb. Thanks for all your comments. I was given something new in the example of the baby. What I was hoping to find out was if anyone else would note that in the head nod and the head shake combined, that is, if the two gestures are ‘traced out’ and then ‘superimposed on’ one another, you get a sign of the cross — and | = +. Guess I didn’t phrase the question exactly in a leading enough way.
So** if **the observation is correct about the cross sign, then why would the horizontalwise direction be “no” and the veritcalwise be “yes”?
