I am completely aware about the recent ban on any discussions of either evolution or Atheism.

However, I am hoping this post will not be blocked.

I was wondering what all of you have as an initial justification for your faith? As in, why do you believe in God?

I will not respond, will not argue, and will not discuss nonbelief, so I think this doesn’t violate any forum rules. I apologize if it does. Just let me know if this is in poor taste.

So, why do you believe?

Thanks for any reply : ).

Many aspects of an answer. here are some fragment.

Beauty, reason, joy, hope, the wonder of creation, that reason exists at all, the sense of wonder while standing under the stars, love, order, the human person, that there is logos -meaning in things and events, a little baby, if there is a desire present in man for happiness…there must something to answer this, sunsets, mountains, the ocean at dusk, friendship…a religious sense.

this all comes as …‘natural’ reasons …

under supernatural: Jesus Christ of Nazareth. (not a fragment!) His resurrection. His words…the words of St. Paul…Faith, Hope and Charity, the Church, the Martyrs, those who first carried the Gospel, the Sacred Scriptures, the Eucharist, the other Sacraments…the wisdom of the Saints, their lives, the witness of Pope Benedict XVI, the experience of God and of forgiveness of sins, the life of prayer, the joy of the resurrection, the Holy Spirit, the reasonableness of the Catholic Faith, the historical reality of the life of Jesus, of his death, of the event of his resurrection, Lourdes, Miracles, Our Lady, events in my life, the graces of prayer…

above all and in all Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

He is my hope…my life…

I believe in God, who is kind and merciful, and all-powerful.

And without God there is no life.

When the doomed no more can flee
From the flames of misery
With the chosen call me

Before You , humbled, Lord, I lie
My heart like ashes, crushed and dry
Assist me when I die!!

Full of tears and full of dread
Is that day that wakes the dead
Calling all with solemn blast

To be Judged for all their past
Lord have mercy, Jesus blest
Grant them all Your Light and Rest!
Go in peace to love and to serve the Lord.

I believe in God because to not believe is foolish.

I believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Joseph because He is the Unified One God - Creator - All Loving and Just.

I believe in Jesus Christ, because He proclaims that Love in the most pure fashon and by so doing shows us they true way to our Loving God.

Peace
James

Originally ?
because based on considering what I’d have to win or lose, it seemed foolish not to believe…nothing to lose, eternity to gain.

Now ?
the overwhelming personal experience of His Presence in my life.

Of course there were lots of stages in between…

I was raised by my Christian mom and Christian grandma, saw alot my Christian dad, and talked often to my Christian aunt. While my dad was Baptist (he now considers himself "non-denominational), my grandma was Pentecostal, then Baptist, and now Seventh Day Adventist and my mom was her own “denomination” (she followed some random old testament laws such as not eating pork, mixing milk with beef, not mixing threads in clothing, etc) while still also following the teachings of Jesus and believing in him, she’s currently “just” a believer, my Aunt was like everything Baptist to Mormon to Methodist to Seventh Day Adventist, however they have always believed in God, prayed to Him and trusted in Him and that is why I had a foundation for faith.

When I turned 16 (the age I am now) I started questioning my faith. I always believed in God but I didn’t attend church, pray unless I was in trouble or needed something and I wasn’t sure if I believed in Jesus. I began researching each major religion (Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism) and found that either Christianity or Islam was true. I narrowed it down to Christianity for many reasons. The reason I believe in God is because even though I questioned everything and thought of being a Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, Jew, Christian, Deist, Atheist, etc. I realized that the only logical reason we are here is that Someone created us, and if that Someone created us, then that Someone must have a purpose and why would He not leave us with some instructions (the Holy Bible)? God for me, obviously exists because religion exists, humans exist, the earth itself exists. This didn’t happen by accident. I believe in absolute truths and absolute morals, as do most people. For me, all of this is more than enough to make me believe in God.

Thanks for all of the responses!

Keep them coming, this is a wealth of good information.

Ahhh Huh ! right…

“Deviating from faith, they are implicated in the darkness of perpetual blindness, although they have the day of Christ and the light of the Church before them; while seeing nothing, they open their mouth as if they knew everything, keen for vain things and dull for things eternal.” ---- Ambrose, Bishop, Father and Doctor of the Church, Saint; commenting in the 4th century on the “wise of the world”

Here’s the story of why I believe.

I prayed a certain prayer for about two years. The prayer was “God, please grant me the grace of greater faith and teach me to trust you more”. Now, after a few years of praying this almost every day, I began meeting with a Traditional Catholic Priest once a week. As he explained the teachings of the Church to me, I remember saying to him “this is all common sense”. That is how the teachings of the Church struck me at the time. They struck me as being so obviously true, that they were the equivalent of “common sense”.

It wasn’t until years later that I discovered why these teachings struck me as “common sense”. The reason is because as I was praying every day and asking for an increase of faith. As I was praying, God was answering the prayer.

What is faith? Faith is a theological virtue. It is a virtue of the intellect that helps us to believe in the truths that God has revealed. As I prayed that prayer, the virtue of faith was increasing in my intellect to such an extent that when the truths were finally made known to me, it struck me as common sense.

So, why do I believe? I believe because God gave me the theological virtue of faith. If I did not believe, I would have to reject what I interiorly know to be true. I don’t “know” it by scientific experimentation, but by another way. I know it in the same way that a person will recognize an obvious truth to be true.

And let me add that believing the truth is extremely intellectually satisfying. In fact, it is more than just satisfying, it is intellectually stimulating and intellectually joyful. Our intellect, which was created for truth (just as our will was created for love), is extremely fulfilled when it is in possession of the truth.
