Hello,

I’ve recently begun to attend the extraordinary version of the Mass (the Tridentine) mass at Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Philadelphia.

I am wondering if anyone could suggest a good missal that will help me follow along with the mass. I am using an old missal right now that I found in my great uncle’s belongings, but it is quite beat up. I’d like to find a new one - preferably something compact and leather bound.

Peace and Blessing,

Michael Meehan

Commentary on the EF? Traditional Catholicism
See this thread.

I personally use the one published by Angelus Press. Yes, it’s the publishing arm of the SSPX, but that’s not why I bought it. It has nice commentary in the margins for the Mass, I prefer its formatting over the Baronius (FSSP) one. It, however, has fewer ribbons (5 as opposed to 6) and the cover is not leather. Content wise I haven’t seen anything denouncing the Ordinary form of Mass or anything like that, there’s a prayer after Mass for this one SSPX group in there, but the content is good. Fr. Z also goes over the Angelus and Baronoius Press ones if that’ll help you make a decision!

Missals are made with quality “bible grade” paper designed to last a very long time. Most didn’t get as “beat up” as your uncle’s, and Latin Masses have been pretty rare over the last 50 years.

I’d look for one in an estate sale, used bookstores before going “new”

Install the iMass app on your phone. It’s $1.99 and works beautifully.

Which one do you have now?

Some of them are available in re-prints. So there’s a chance that you might be able to get a brand new one that looks exactly like the one you have now.
