A Request to a 'few' Catholics

I’m a searching Protestant. I come here to communicate and learn. The problem for me is that this is such a huge site with so many folks asking and answering so many questions that I get lost in a hurry.

I’d like to find a smaller group of knowledgeable Catholics who are willing to take on some (seemingly) hard questions.

For about a month I’ve been attending a small weekday RC Mass two-three times a week, but haven’t yet developed any relationships outside of brief chats about daily life. Obviously anything further will take some time. I’m hesitant to take Catholic classes for two reasons. First, I don’t want to come across as someone who’s ready to jump into Catholicism, and I get the feeling that’s exactly who that classes are aimed at. Second, I’m not convinced that most Catholics in this very non-Catholic area (Boise, Id. USA) are prepared for tough questions.

If you have a small web discussion group that would be open to an ‘outsider’, (or perhaps you see a better plan), then please let me know. I’m very serious about this and promise I won’t waste your time. I do believe my questions are (and will be) tough ones though, so please reply accordingly and as the Spirit leads you.

Mig, yes, the forums here are very active with thousands of members. However, CAF has a moderately new feature called Social Groups which are sort of like a mini-forum for a special interest.

A quick search of the groups shows one which might be of interest to you: Catholic Converts. Here is the description of the group’s focus
A group for converts from other Christian sects or other religions, which will hopefully be a place where people will discuss why they converted, and help other people make a decision on whether they should convert.

That group has only 38 members, so it might be more on the scale you are looking for. A possible drawback is that in small groups such as this, participation may be spotty. There doesn’t seem to be much activity during the past few months in that group, so posting there may require some wait before other members notice your post and take an interest in it.
 
If your are interested in communication you might try the Apologetics forum. But I want to suggest that you take a look at the Catholic Answerrs library tracts on this website. They may be of some help in answering some of the questions you might have catholic.com/library/faith_tracts.asp

Another option might be to post a bit and, if someone seem particularly knowledgable, or you and he/she seem to “click”, you could ask if they would PM with you.
I do understand how this site, so big and so useful, can become overwhelming at times.
But please always remember that we want to help in any way we can…

I would like to suggest you obtain the following to further your investigation:
  1. COLLEGE Apologetics by Father Anthony Alexander. An easy read that provides a very good foundation of the Catholic Faith.
  2. www.salvationhistory.com this is Scott Hahns web site, and I would suggest you get his conversion story CD.
  3. Google Steve Ray, who was a former Baptist, and get his conversion CD from his web site
  4. “New” have not read it myself yet, but THE FATHERS KNOW BEST by Jimmy Akin. This is a compilation from the early church fathers and their teachings, which has been the source of many well educated evangelicals converting to the Catholic faith once they have read the teachings of the early church fathers. Mr. Akin has made it easier than researching every early father, he has put them all in one reference.

Marcus Grodi’s Coming Home Network site is geared to converts, reverts, and inquirers into the Caholic Church. It’s faithful to the Church’s teaching and has an online forum where questions are discussed: chnetwork.org/forum/

Scott Hahn is a must! He makes things easy to understand.

Also, if you ever get to this point down the road Catholic Christianity by Peter Kreeft breaks down the Catechism to make it MUCH easier to digest 👍

 It just so happens that I am helping my "daughter" through her conversion process and it has taken a few years to finally get her situated and finally this coming Easter vigil will see her taking the sacraments. So I am used to being peppered with questions on a daily and sometimes hourly basis.
Even though she’s attending RCIA she like you has not formed any close relationships except with her sponsor who lives with her and myself. So she definitely relies on the support of other Catholics online and in person.

I would be happy to answer any questions or just chat about anything at all that may be confusing for you during this time. Feel free to PM me anytime. There is nothing worse than seeing someone desperately trying to discern their calling and having no one around them. They give up and think this is not for them and they drift away. No one should have to feel isolated in a church with millions of members. That’s absurd!
