Yeah like that guarantees anything. MacBrien the heretic at Notre Dame has a PHD and teaches graduate courses if thats the criteria he’s looking for than EWTN will even bigger troubleI guess Hans King PHD keeps him from error. The alphabets can be a detriment to one’s orthodoxy like anything else. What Sugenesis wants is an ubber traditionalist station that has it in for the Jews who control the Vatican and the US Governament yada yada.
Isn’t it courious he mentions the jealousy angle up front to disaude the argument althogetehr. Look he’s jealouus he got the can is working for himself, heck he writes on his website and his email practically begging me for money so he can keep afloat so it appears the ubber trads are not large enough in number to support his dissenting views much longer. Too bad he showed much promise early in his conversion but he has gone the way of Tertullian he is now more catholic than the pope, to holy to be associated with the Vatican 2 and Norvos ordo crowd. He has seen the errors of the past 5 popes and they all have missed the pope the keys to the kingdom lies with the ubber trads and not Office of Peter or so they would like us to believe.
Hmmm…sounds like you have not really know Sungenis’ work, and his positions, but continue to apply the traditionalist stereotype on him… He doesnt need YOUR money to “stay afloat”… His apostolate is doing well enough to continue writing his excellent books on Catholic doctrines.

The fact that Colin Donovan is reportedly editing *Mother Angelica Live *and the assertion that 40% of the employees of EWTN are Protestant is disturbing. If this article is accurate, we should all worry about EWTN eventually buckling under the pressure of “liberal Catholics”. I don’t know enough about Robert Sungenis to be certain what to believe.

Let’s not fight stereotype with stereotype though. I think this site is evidence that the bulk of converts from protestantism are fairly (and sometimes overly) orthodox in their beliefs and passions.

I agree somewhat because I did think something and that’s that I think this is “basura” which means garbage and then laughed about it. http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i85/Alegre-Fe/Emoticons/Laughing.gif I’m not going to lose sleep over this article because I know I will keep on watching EWTN and enjoy what I see and hear. :yup:
Even if they they *were *to teach error? That must take faith… I really think this is something to assess on a case by case basis… lest you believe blindly.

I agree with you also.

Whatever criticism can be made against EWTN (although I won’t be one to make any), the good this network has accomplished and continues to accomplish, when looking through the lens of eternity, far outweighs any bad. In other words, as the Scriptures tell us, we will be able to tell by the fruit that springs out from this ministry, is it good fruit?

And if the same test is applied to the critics, how will they fare in the end? 😉
So, if my good works outweight my evil deeds, am I a justified person?

Sungenis traveled to Oregon to debate on Sedevacantism… It is available at his website, and is rather good… very logical, very direct, very Catholic.
Ditto…it’s also free to download… If anybody wants the debate set, donate $5 to CAI and I will send you the mp3/wma, with his permission.

My posts in here, which don’t really amount to anything substantial LOL are only about the book itself. I got that book sent to me in the mail for free. I saw it, flipped through some of the pages a little, then filed under “g” for garbage!

I didn’t even read the review in that link. I’ll have to save the PDF file and read it later.
Aha, you didnt read it… so perhaps you have no right to critique it… So, when a Protestant flips through a Catholic book, say one of Mark Shea’s books, and says “Garbage”, and tosses it, would you be up for that? Hmmmm

That was my mistake, I admit. If you read my other posts after that, you will notice that I was criticizing the BOOK and not the review on the book. I just thought this was about the book itself and not about a review on the book. I did read parts of the book, enough to know that it IS garbage. It was not written by a protestant either.

And as far as your question if a protestant read a Catholic book and said it was garbage, I would just chalk it up to ignorance and then pray for that person.

I love EWTN. Fr. Corapi is fantastic. I never watched Mother Angelica much, but what I saw, I liked. I try to never miss World Over Live.

I guess what bothers me the most is what I asked about in the Ask an Apologist forum, but to my dismay was never answered. As a former Baptist, the thing that knocked down the brick wall separating me from firmly believing what the Church teaches was when I finally saw that Jesus gave His authority to Peter and the Apostles, and I saw in Acts where they passed on the authority.

However, in all things, real life is often not as wonderful as it is meant to be. I see bishops disagreeing with Rome, I had a deacon who told me “We’re the American Church – we don’t have to do everything Rome says,” and I see (in this article) Mother Angelica, whom you would think would follow the teachings of the Magesterium implicitly, arguing with bishops. I have yet to hear a good explanation for these things, but (and it breaks my heart to say this) it sounds like Protestantism in Catholic clothing.

With all my heart, I was so excited to be in the Church Jesus established, where authority was the key to understanding God’s Word. I just don’t know how to deal with the disagreements. Is there Magisterial authority or not?

Just curious… Care to give us a few examples of what made this book get the rating of “garbage”? Must have been really powerful charges to get such a powerful response… I read the book too, all of it… I wasnt too happy about it myself, but I dont think it’s “garbage”…

the protestant question was intended to draw a parallel, of one who deems materials not fully considered as “garbage” based on incomplete knowledge.

Mother Angelica was not disagreeing with just any bishop, but the “Cardinal of California”, referring to our good Cardinal Mahoney. I am not his biggest fan either, so I won’t defend him. I have the document which she critiqed, and though I dont think she should have used the language she used, I think the point she made hits the nail on the head… “Dearest Princes of our Catholic Church- you intentionally water down our faith, and you will hear from the faithful, you better believe it”.

But what I still don’t understand is, aren’t we obliged to accept the decisions of the bishops, since they are part of the apostolic succession instituted by Christ? I realize I’m probably missing some nuance, but if the bishop has the authority over his flock (the local diocese), then how can Mother Angelica or anyone else buck his authority? I’m on Mother Angelica’s side on the issue in question in the article, but I don’t see what gives her the right to refuse to abide by the bishops decision. Also, I’m dishearented by some of the statements of the USCCB, and I also realize that bishops in different dioceses have made opposing statements, but again, what gives us the right to argue with the bishops?

Here is Canon 212 in the 1983 Code of Canon Law:

Can. 212 ß1 Christ’s faithful, conscious of their own responsibility, are bound to show Christian obedience to what the sacred Pastors, who represent Christ, declare as teachers of the faith and prescribe as rulers of the Church.

ß2 Christ’s faithful are at liberty to make known their needs, especially their spiritual needs, and their wishes to the Pastors of the Church.

ß3 They have the right, indeed at times the duty, in keeping with their knowledge, competence and position, to manifest to the sacred Pastors their views on matters which concern the good of the Church. They have the right also to make their views known to others of Christ’s faithful, but in doing so they must always respect the integrity of faith and morals, show due reverence to the Pastors and take into account both the common good and the dignity of individuals.

ß3 …but in doing so they must always respect the integrity of faith and morals, show due reverence to the Pastors and take into account both the common good and the dignity of individuals.
Thanks, I appreciate the information. Did Mother Angelica abide by this requirement?

Though she exercised her right to protest what she thought was ill-teaching, she was caught on the above quote and other canons I believe, when she said the words on international TV, “My obedience in that diocese would be zero”. Read her biography, it talks about the whole incident.

It’s all a matter of what you consider “garbage” and what I consider “garbage.” You know what they say, “one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.”

All in all, if you knew me you would know that that’s how I am. I tend to be more on the emotive side on how I present my feelings about certain things. Put it this way, I did not like the book. And besides, if you didn’t like the book either why do you care if others liked it or not?

You’re Catholic, why are you picking on another Catholic? This is part of the reason why Protestants think we’re nuts and want no part of us, they don’t see us as “together.” Pope John Paul the Great said that if WE are not together others will see that so we should start unity within our own circle of Catholics. So what are you trying to prove and to whom? (rhetorical question).

Are you saying that fellow Catholics cannot be corrected? Are you saying that we should pretend like we agree on everything so that we can not turn away Protestants? The unity which we ought to have are on matters of faith and morals… If EWTN has an error or two, it must be corrected, lest it scandalize the faithful… We cant just sweep it under the rug and say, “what error?”…
