What is a good defense for some one who tries to draw a comparison between how much money Peter had and how much money the Pope and the Church has?
 
Simple. The wealth of the Church is held in trust. It is not the pope’s personal stash. JPII died with no assets.

Is the manager of the local bank rich because he is an overseer of the funds entrusted to him?
 
The only salary a pope gets to keep are the coins he is buried with.
 
Any one knows how much money the Church donates to charity?

A neighborhood congregation of protestants surely collects tithes from its members, keeping enough in savings to get the church through unexpected emergencies.

Well, the Catholic Church is a world-wide Church, and so it stands to reason that it would hold significant assets to protect and preserve itself in times of crisis.

And not just on a material level. The Church is entrusted with the deposit of faith. The loss of the teaching office of the Church would devastate civilization.

Ask your friend to read the book How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization by Thomas E. Woods, PhD. The book gives a good idea of how essential the Church is to survival.

  1. How much money DID Peter have?
  2. How much money does the Pope have?
  3. As far as the Catholic Church’s wealth goes,
a. we’ve been one family for 2000 years. That’s huge when you think about how that effects wealth

b. One could also say that splits and divides in a family causes a 50% drop to ones wealth on each split. One only has to think about how divorce effects ones wealth .

Consider Vatican hill for example, the site of the Vatican and the grounds around the Vatican. It’s been in the family for at least 1700 years. Nice appreciation on 1 property don’t ya think? The Catholic Church has alot of property like this around the world that has been in one and the same family.

Protestantism on the other hand, is made up of denominations that are each independent from the others, and they split and divide routinely. That effects the net worth of each individual denomination. The wealth gets split and divided endlessly among new denominations, reducing the wealth of each individual denomination. Collectively though, the wealth is still there, it’s just divided among more individual congregations. Protestants as a whole don’t pool their resources among Protestantism because they are not one with each other, and they have no central government…Catholics worldwide are one under the Pope therefore wealth from one Church, one family is used globally.

A lot of the Church’s supposed “wealth” consists of things that, while they are priceless, are pretty much unsaleable. To whom would the Church sell St. Peter’s Basilica or the Sistine Chapel?

I see many hospitals named after saints (in Nashville, we have St. Thomas Hospital). Does the Church provide for any of these hospitals?

The Church, (and certainly not the Vatican) very seldom provides direct support to hospitals. They are usually operated by religious orders or foundations. The annual report for St. Thomas Hospital is here.
 
I think if we will ask the pope how much wealth does the church have i think his answer will be

“we have the riches on heaven and earth but we do not own them. It is entrusted to us by the rightful owner, and that is GOD.”

The donation of the lives of Edith Stein & Maximillian Kolbe who gave their lives for others in the Concentration Camps would seem to be worth something.

But I’m sort of old fashioned in my view of what charity is.
 
Speaking of which, if I remember correctly the Vatican and all its treasures are insured for only one euro.
