“If I adore You out of fear of Hell, burn
me in Hell!
If I adore You out of desire for
Paradise,
Lock me out of Paradise.
But if I adore You for Yourself alone,
Do not deny to me Your eternal
beauty.”

It’s a Muslim prayer isn’t it? I remember reading about a Sufi who taught that.

It is a beautiful expression of the desire for God alone to which we should aspire, which God does make possible by his grace, and I do love it. 🙂

At the same time, I am profoundly grateful that although this is how God wants us to love him, he is in practice more merciful than the prayer requests. 😉

Rabia al-Basri, according to what I’ve seen. 🙂

there is another name associated with this, also…
and regarding Rabia:
"She was born between 95 and 99 Hijri in Basra, Iraq. Much of her early life is narrated by Farid al-Din Attar. Farid al-Din Attar, a later Sufi saint and poet, used earlier sources. Rabia herself did not leave any written works."

She has an interesting bio. Reminds me of an early mystic…

C’mon! Help us out here!!:D:D:D Teach us something!!
