A Scrupolous Question About Driving

Hello everyone,
This is going to seem like a very scrupolous and small matter, but its something that i really want to ask about. So ive recently passed my DMV license test and got my license. However, in my state, you need 50 hours of experience to be eligible to test. I never recorded my hours and to take my test, i turned in a signed, notarized paper certifying that i did in fact have fifty hours experience. I mean, i may or may not have had fifty hours i really dont know, but i do feel like i know the road well and that im a safe driver, however, whenever i drive, i feel guilty. Is this a sin? I know its kind of laughable, but i appreciate all answers Thanks.

Have you had a reasonable amount of practice? Somewhere that you feel is close to 50 hours? If so I would say this is a venial sin, you lied, but you didn’t really hurt anyone.

However, if you didn’t drive at all and claimed 50 this would be a serious sin as you are now endangering your life and others life because of your inexperience.

Look at it from my side. I’ve been driving for years, I don’t want someone next to me that’s only been driving for 20 minutes once in his life.

If you passed the Driving exam and the written test you are obviously a competent driver, however if you don’t have a lot of experience I would not try driving on the highways and long distances, stick to places you are comfortable with. I got my license this year and my permeant expired before I took the test so the teacher just dated a few days earlier than when he actually signed it. I don’t feel this was a sin, I took the written (twice ) and driving test and passed.

It depends on the state. The Maryland driving test truly does not test competency at all.

Well, if you’re concerned about it, it seems the safest thing to do would be to confess it. It would have been better to log your hours, and if you have any younger siblings or friends you might want to encourage them to do that.

But since you’re not sure you even lied, I’m not sure how it could be said that you lied deliberately… Anyway, take it to confession and accept the priest’s word on it, is what I would suggest. He may say it’s not a sin, or if it is you will have confessed it, so either way it’s good.

Some people who have been driving for years are the worst.

It probably depends on what exactly you signed. For my test, my parents had to sign a paper under penalty of perjury that I had practiced for 60 hours.

If you are really worried, take a conservative estimate of how many hours you have driven and drive with an adult for enough hours to make up the deficit.
