  1. Does society ever allow actions that are harmful, which -taken to their extreme, even, can wipe out the human race?
The argument is PROMOTE.

Do we PROMOTE what is harmful to the common good?
  1. Perhaps the problem is that the proposition contains two negative terms:…
The problem is you can’t refute the argument as stated.

When you change the argument you have created a strawman… if that makes you fell better…go for it.

The problem with this is that the argument is about** whether gay marriage can be permitted. **

You say that to permit it is to promote it
and
to promote it will lead to universal acceptance of it
and
universal acceptance of it will lead to universal practice of it
and
universal practice of it will lead to the extinction of the human race
Therefore
in order to protect the human race from extinction, society must not permit civil gay marriage

Is that not your line of reasoning?

Incidentally,
Stephen, you are also wrong about this. You posted

The Catholic Church definitely does promote priesthood, and spends a lot of money doing so.

A requirement of priesthood is celibacy
(unless you want to speak in favor of married priests, but that’s a different string)

Therefore the Catholic Church promotes celibacy
which

if embraced by all males would lead to
(wait for it)
the extinction of the human race!

Many religious organisations PROMOTE celibacy and government in turn PROMOTES this by allowing those religions organisations to claim tax breaks as charities.

If everyone was celibate then the human race would go extinct, which is harmful to the common good.

Do we PROMOTE what is harmful to the common good?

My understanding of the OP’s arguments that it is we should not PROMOTE any activity which is harmful to the common good.
The extinction of the human race is not good.

Apparently we do
