A simple experiement demonstrating spontaneous generation

I believe I have demonstrated spontaneous generation with a simple microscope and Paramecia. What I did was boil a glass of water and I placed a dried-out Basil seed into the glass. Within a few days there were millions of Paramecia! Note that a Paramecium survives only in water and multiply by sexual and asexual reproduction. The riddle is in knowing that a Paramecium can live only in water and that my water was boiled to remove any trace of living organisms. The seed was over a few years old and did not contain any moisture whatsoever.

Looking more closely at the process, I could see bacteria forming from the seed. I also suspect that the Paramecium quickly evolved from the bacteria. If anybody can explain my finding, I would be glad to hear it!

I find that extraordinary for a unicellular organism.

Did you know that Kangaroos during drought who have a Joey at foot, or a Joey in the pouch can arrest the development of an embryo in the uterus until the young one is weaned. When the drought breaks, the embryo resumes growing.

Not all microbes die at 100C, therefore, your experiment is at best, inconclusive.

Well from what / how you have provided such information , if you had of let us know if you did then after the water was boiled, apply the seed again , for a designated time , then there is a chance of a proper analysis , for it is not like the cloud rain situation of spontaneous combustion .

Without being crass it take`s time let alone much effort to combine compatible scenarios before there is an end product .
Manipulation and helpful practices are easy to miscalculate .

Nutrient`s could then only evaporate , when prolonged exposure was demonstrated .

I think that you are underestimating how strong life can be here. The obvious explanation of your result here is that the paramecia are surviving on the seed even when dry.

TRY it , find out and tell us .

Is there a control?

Same glass, same water, boiled exactly the same way, without the seed?

Unboiled? Different glass? Different water?

An experiment without a control is not very scientific.

Paramecia which can survive dry spells in a cyst tend to have more descendants than Paramecia which cannot survive a dry spell. The mechanistic process you are looking for is called “Natural Selection”.

Interesting experiement [sic] but even though it was simple I don’t think you included enough information to make a reasonable judgment. I’m assuming you have published your results in a peer reviewed scientific journal? Perhaps you could provide us with a link to the full write up.

If the Paramecium creates a cyst as a survival mechanism, how did the Paramecium first get into the seed? Keep in mind that the Paramecium does not flourish in seeds.

It seems to me that your conclusion that you witnessed spontaneous generation is not supported by the facts of your experiment. Your question above needs to be addressed. To assume they, the paramecium, where not on or in the seeds, or somewhere else in your experimental setup, is not justified.

Did you thoroughly wash the surface of the seed in a disinfectant capable of killing an encysted Paramecium? Did you cover the water container to prevent encysted Paramecia drifting in (they are very small and can be carried by air currents)?

You might want to look at the experimental details of Louis Pasteur’s experiments in this area.

No, I did not disinfect the surface of the seed in fear that I might ruin it (it needs to sprout roots in order for the experiment to work). I also did not have my jar covered to prevent airborne cysts from drifting in.

What would be useful is time-lapsed photography to see if the Paramecium are evolving from the bacteria.

It’s just that I do not trust science. The theory of evolution, for example, I feel is a scam.
