A sincere question about prayer in Islam

Hello,
I thought this would be the right place to ask this question I have often wondered about. What is the purpose of the various positions in Islamic prayer? I know the Christian Catholic reason for kneeling & bowing, but I am not familiar with the waist bend with hands on knees & the wiping if the face, palms upward, forehead to the ground etc. Thanks for you answers
 
Actually there are hadiths which describe how Muhammed used to perform his prayer, most of those hadiths can be found in Sunan Abu-Dawud here.
 
Thank you Sam. I read several of them but Im afraid it doesnt quite answer my question. Well I guess it might, is it basically saying the reason it is done is because that is what the profit did? Not any sort of reason like we raise our palms up in praise of heaven or we bow down as a sign of our complete submission? I guess that was what I was looking for, the WHY.

“WHY” in Islam is equal “Because” Muhammed did it.
“WHY” Muhammed did it, Muslims are not allowed to question WHY Muhammed did what he did in prayer or any other aspect of Islam, that is the concept of “submission in Islam”.

These are not universally required beliefs of Islam.

The “only” requirement of “Islam” is that prayer be performed in a area that is Clean, When you speak of the way hands are held in prayer. In many countrys the followers of Catholic and Christain faith also do this. Pray Rugs have been a “tradition” because it provides an area which is “clean” regardless of where one is.

Also to kneel, bow and prostrate on the ground is for, and in humility of their God.
