This is a fair question to raise. In many ways the debate over Tradition and Modernity is similar to the debate over current economic woes. Some believe we should keep going in the house of clay built on a foundation of sand and hope things get better, and others feel it is better to let the corruption tear itself down and let new, stronger financial institutions rise from the ashes.
In the Church today we are already lukewarm, Revelation 3:14-16
Should we give in to the world and accommodate or should we set an example in truth?
The tougher things get for us if the church does not give in to the world (and they will get tougher, just ask any anyone who asks God to make them a better person in their prayers) the more the believers will be refined.
Right now it is common for many in the world to think Christians are not a good example. What would it take to make Christians a good example? Suffering even unto death? Such opportunity may arise, and the few who perserver in their example of faith even though they may perish will lead many to Christ.
And, as GK Chesterton put it, the Church is not behind the times, the Church is beyond the times.
