ScottH:
But if purgatory is only for sins that are forgiven, how “forgiven” are they? Remember- he said “It is done.” He paid the cost.
Christ did indeed by the cost, the sins repented of are forgiven and the person will have eternal life with God - this addresses the justification part without the sanctification part. Sanctification can involve suffering, and Scripture describes it as an ongoing process, not a one-time-event. And for those who die not yet perfectly sanctified, the Lord won’t abandon them:

(I Corinthians 3:12-15) Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw – each man’s work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

Purgatory alone can explain this passage, for a saved person is suffering loss on the Day of the Lord - Judgement Day. Purgatory is for those folks who have been forgiven by Our Lord, but are as yet not completely sanctified. Purgatory is the final application of Jesus’ sanctifying forgiveness being applied to those who still need to be made perfect - this perfectly sanctified condition is necessary for all those written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Otherwise they’d be unable to enter Heaven.

I’m short on time, and can’t write more. Here are a couple of good short articles to help you understand Purgatory - the first one is really informative:
