There is only one Catholic Church, there is only one Church, which by definition is apostolic.
I agree. But when people ask your religion, do you say “I belong to the Church”? Probably not, because people wouldn’t whether by “the Church” you meant “the Roman Catholic Church”, “the Eastern Orthodox Church”, or something else entirely.
To claim you don’t know what we mean by ‘non-Catholic’ when coming to a Catholic Apolgetics Forums is deliberate ignorance IMO.
It’s not a matter of anyone not being able to figure out what we mean by “Non-Catholic Religions Forum”. It’s a matter of, if you will, ecumenical courtesy.

If I go to an Eastern Orthodox forum and they have a sub-forum title “Dialogue between the one true Church and heterodox Christians”, then I can figure out that they are including me in “the heterodox”, but I would be more appreciative if they instead had a forum titled “Dialogue between Eastern Orthodox and other Christians”.

I was talking specifically to the poster who was claiming to be confused as to what was meant by “non-Catholic religions”.

On one popular Baptist board the equivalent of this forum is simply called “False Religions.” Anybody who complains about this place being uncharitable should go have a look at some of the stuff that’s posted there.

Thank you. I searched and I believe I have found it. It is part of a forum associated with a Baptist church which carries the following title and subtitles:
Landover Baptist Church
Guaranteeing Salvation Since 1620
WHERE THE WORTHWHILE WORSHIP - UNSAVED WELCOME!
And the particular subforum you were referring to is called:
False Religions and Cults: Catholics, Wiccans, Lutherans, Satanists, Mormons, and more!
As you can see, Mormons, Catholics, and Satanists are classified under the same category! 😃

By the way, I saw neither Mormons nor Catholics posting there. It is occupied mainly by people of their own kind, casting up hate and venom on everyone else—especially on Catholics.

Amazing! This site becomes weirder and weirder the more I look at it. At the bottom of the page there is a request for donations, with the following notice written above it:
To assure that you get full credit for your donation in Heaven, giving to the Landover Baptist Church or forum thereof is not tax-deductible on earth and will secure you no worldly (ascertainable, material) gain. As Godly Christians, we intend to take over this country and do not constitute a charity. You agree that we make no representations to induce you to donate a love offering!
What kind of sucker is it I wonder that falls for this kind of stuff? Apparently there are some, otherwise nobody would post anything there.

My dear Rawb, I agree and disagree!

I agree there is only one Church but I think Holy Orthodox is also part of the original Church. A single coin with two distinct faces each of which has its own characteristics.

I must also take issue with what appears to be a little aggressive towards our Seperated Brethren. They have every right to come here and it is obviously forum policy that they are very welcome.

As for ‘seperated brethren’, I see the ‘brethren’ as primary and the 'seperated as secondary. If we are brothers and sisters, then they are our cousins. They are still our kith and kin in Christ. Indeed we pray for their leaders every week in the petitions at Holy Mass.

Blessings and peace.

The issue is that if a Catholic, or anybody else, offers anything in the way of apologetics that belies the ignorant rhetoric common to the participants on that board, they get flamed and ultimately banned; it’s a pointless exercise. If you’ve ever wondered if anybody actually believes Chick Tracts; well, the answer is “yes,” and you can find them on that site in numbers. Of course the general level of spelling and grammar suggests a mean level of intelligence/education that could probably be best described as sub-Neanderthal, and that would tend to explain the myopic wordviews.

It’s probably uncharitable of me to say this, but it can be morbidly entertaining.

You do realize that site is satire, right?

P.S. It even says at the bottom, “The Landover Baptist Church® is not intended for readers under 18 years of age.”

Sorry, that’s NOT the board I was talking about. The one I was referring to is the On Line Baptist Forum: onlinebaptist.com/messageboards/index.php

The forum I mentioned, “False Religions,” is under the “Biblical Issues” header and you have to register to access this. It’s a huge site and I’m sure you’ll all enjoy reading how about how we’re all going to HELL…

I’m afraid you will get plenty of disagreement about that. Perhaps you are unaware that many faith traditions recite the exact same nicene creed you do and also recite “I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church” just as you do. You may BELIEVE what you will, but others will also I can assure you. The Anglican church is fully catholic and apostolic from our point of view. So I am engaging in no “deliberate ignorance” but perhaps you might check a bit more thoroughly next time before making such a statement. Excuse me by the SUBFORUM is non-Catholic. I took it too mean non-Roman Catholic, but it is a bit inaccurate as stated.

Getting back to the original question, I was just thinking about an analogy that might help: suppose I’m the pastor of a Roman Catholic parish, and every Tuesday I lead a discussion group about the differences and similarities between Catholicism and various Protestant denominations; and suppose further that every Wednesday I teach a class about Catholicism for Protestants who are thinking about converting or who just want to learn about Catholicism.

Needless to say, I want to encourage people to join both groups, right? But let’s say a Protestant comes up to me and tells me he wants to join one of the groups, but hasn’t decided which one. What would I say to him? Unless I’m unusually ecumenical-minded, I’m going to prefer that he join the class on Tuesday, right?

I think it’s basically the same thing here: Catholics on CAF (posters and mods alike) do want Protestants here, but they’d prefer participation on sub-forums like “Apologetics” and “Eastern Catholicism”, i.e. sub-forums where the focus is on learning about Catholicism, rather than the “Non-Catholic Religions” forum where the focus is on “equal time” and what-not.

Hence, lumping various “Non-Catholic religions” together under the “Non-Catholic Religions” forum may serve a useful function, insofar as it nudges Orthodox and Protestant posters in the direction of those other forums.

(Needless to say, this is really nothing like Protestant forums that use headlines like “False Religions and Cults: Catholics, Wiccans, Lutherans, Satanists, Mormons”. Although I think that particular quote came from the phony website, but you get what I mean.)

Hey I have signed up. Please look out for Lilyflower. I will be pleased to make your acqainance

We are called to witness to Christ and lead our lost brethren home.

We can only do that by witnessing to what we believe

Blessings and peace
LOL, good luck!

Be careful though, you’ll get banned in a heartbeat if you don’t tread very lightly.

I’m afraid you will get plenty of disagreement about that.
LoL of course there is disagreement about that, that’s what makes you protestants.

The Anglican community also believes that women can be bishops, that homosexuality is fine by God, that birth control is a blessing from above and that you don’t need to be under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Rome. This is why they’re not part of The Church. If there wasn’t disagreement then they would be Catholics.
Perhaps you are unaware that many faith traditions recite the exact same nicene creed you do and also recite “I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church” just as you do.
Well, if I walk into the Johnson’s house down the road and say “I believe I am a Johnson” does that make me one? Hardly. I am aware of other communities using Catholic beliefs and creeds.
So I am engaging in no “deliberate ignorance” but perhaps you might check a bit more thoroughly next time before making such a statement.
I know all about those communities that claim to be churches. That doesn’t make them one.

But we should continue this on another thread. If you start one, let me know, sorry to the OP for getting off topic.
But let’s say a Protestant comes up to me and tells me he wants to join one of the groups, but hasn’t decided which one. What would I say to him? Unless I’m unusually ecumenical-minded, I’m going to prefer that he join the class on Tuesday, right?
If it were me personally I’d be suggesting the Wednesday Class. True Ecumenism as defined by The Church is to lead our Seperated Brethren back into connection with The Church. In my opinion the first class could be absorbed into the second.

If it were me personally I’d be suggesting the Wednesday Class.
Boy are my cheeks red. 😊

I meant to say “Unless I’m unusually ecumenical-minded, I’m going to prefer that he join the class on Wednesday, right?” (There was no the Tuesday class in my story, rather a Tuesday discussion group.) Hence the analogy with CAF Catholics preferring Protestants and Orthodox participating on the “Apologetics”, “Eastern Catholicism” etc. forums rather than on the “Non-Catholic Religions” forum.

Thanks. 🙂

I wish it was. I had a closer look. That is what it claims to be; but it is anything but. Everybody is sick out there. That is the kind of stuff that Al-Qaida is made of. I flipped through the first 10 pages of the forum. I found four threads about Mormonism, and 27 about the Catholicism! I suggest you go and read them, and your eyes will be opened.
