I see your point, and it is true if one tries to isolate the theme to a limited number of readings related to a theme, such as the Mass Readings…but i use those readings only as a starting point to a themeatic approach…i use Verbum’s Catholic Topical Index…for example, if the theme is “Abba” (I’m only using it because its the first entry), it lists the following references:

Abba

Sacred Scripture
NT Mk 14:36, Ga 4:6, Mt 6:7, Ro 8:15

Church Teaching
Catechism CCC 683, 742, 1303, 2766, 2777; Index “Abba”

Roman Catechism RC 1.2.9, RC 4.9.10

Papal Encyclicals Dom. et Viv. 52, Ut Unum Sint 26

Vatican II LG 11–12, SC 6

Ecclesiastical Writers
St. Ambrose De myst. 7.42
St. Augustine De dono persev. 23.64

I’ve tried doing this a few times and always ended up sidetracked. Doing it for real this time, since I find I’m a lot more disciplined on this sort of thing now.
