I am in the midst of a great struggle right now. I feel like my whole life is meaningless & nothing matters. All of this in spite of all of the impressive things I’ve accomplished in the past year. And yet none of it seems to matter to me. It’s like I can’t even accept a compliment on anything. All I see is my failings. All I see is negative. I’ve pushed friends away & am in danger of losing them because I didn’t know how to handle what I’ve been going through. I’m trying so hard to get out, but am not having an easy time finding help. And I’m kind of afraid to go to a local Catholic therapist because of what it may cost, but I know I need help because trying to do it on my own isn’t working. 😦

Your worth is not dependent on what you’ve accomplished or what you’ve failed on. YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD!!! Your worth is intrinsic – you are a soul created in God’s image who God knew before you were even born! 😃 Don’t believe Satan’s lies - he will keep telling you you’re a failure, but YOU DON’T HAVE TO LISTEN TO HIM.

I’ll remember you in my Rosary and chaplet of Divine Mercy today (you should pray them too if you can – they do wonders for the soul, even if you don’t consciously notice, not to mention Satan HATES them because he knows how close they bring us to Jesus). Try talking to a priest before a therapist if you’re concerned about the cost - the priest is free, and maybe he can help you more than you think! 👍 Also, I’m sure going to confession, spending time in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, and receiving Holy Communion will strengthen you greatly. God bless you! 🙂

Like many others. I suffer from depression and anxiety disorder. Looking back, I think it’s been there all my life (it definitely runs in my family), but it came to a head almost 10 years ago.

In 1996 I swam the Tiber and came Home. Shortly after, I lost a ton of weight and met a guy who was incredibly handsome, but was an even more incredibly horrible influence on me. I eventually stopped going to church and did a complete 180 with my life. After a few months of dating, we moved in together, but I knew in my soul that it was wrong. After about 2 weeks of living together, I developed panic attacks - serious panic attacks. I had no idea what was wrong with me. I actually felt like I was possessed. I spoke with a priest and he assured me I was not possessed, but did bless me and advised me to see a Dr, and that we would continue spiritual guidance when I felt up to it.

I went to the Dr and was hospitalized because I was afraid that in my mania I may try to hurt myself - I didn’t want to hurt myself, but I was aftaid that I might - if that makes sense. I have received years of counseling and I am on meds to this day. Thank God that toxic relationship ended and I was blessed to have found my wonderful DH. I’m now back Home where I should have been all along, too and that is the BEST thing,

I’ll probably be on meds for the rest of my life, but I don’t feel drugged at all - I feel “normal” if there is such a thing. 😛

Thanks for creating this thread - it’s nice to know I’m not alone.

Hey Convert.

I was wondering if getting the foster dog had helped you to focus on her instead of feeling so bad about yourself. I’m truely curious! Not being ugly at all. 🙂

I think this thread is great and will help so many of us. I would like to mention my husband who suffers from both depression and anxiety. He uses things to help him like overeating, smoking etc. Please pray for him. I get depressed just seeing him. I also would like to mention his brother who is living in mortal sin, but is finally looking to God to help straighten out his messed up life caused by sins. He emailed me tonight and said he hates his life and just wants to die, but won’t kill himself. He does suffer from depression and anxiety also. He too is addicted to many things and is a recovering alcoholic. He said tonight, he wants to drink again to feel better, but doesn’t want to throw away 8 years of being sober. Please pray for him also.

I will keep all of you and your intentions in prayer. I have a sister who suffers from depression and severe anxiety. Please keep her also in your prayers. Thanks;)

I also suffer from depression and anxiety. I have had this problem all my life and been on medication since I was 20. Last May, I had a very bad spell and another in August. I couldn’t look to God for strength and stopped going to mass. I’ve only been to mass three times since May because procrastionation is a symptom of the depression and I keep putting off going to confession. Tomorrow night, one of the neighboring parishes is having an Advent Reconciliation Service and I’m going to get myself back to church.

I pray for everyone who suffers from this disease and understanding of those who don’t

So when the depression, anxiety, etc. kicks in how does everybody deal with it? What strategies do you use to get past it?

I usually try to find something to keep my mind busy and lay low. During these times, I can’t relate to prayer and spirituality very well. When I’m having trouble coping with the here and now, it’s difficult to relate to a higher plain.Concentration is very difficult.

I have several books by Henri J. M. Nouwen that I need to read. Hopefully his words will be soothing.

For me, when depression rears its ugly head, I like to talk to my closest friend - she can always make me laugh even if it’s just for a moment, or I come online, or pray or just go to bed.

Anxiety is another thing - as it usually creeps up on me at night. When it does, I find something funny on Tv - like Tv Land or Nick at Nite or I try to give myself a pep-talk (ie: you’ve felt like this before, it will pass, etc), something like that to get my mind off of it. If I “feed” into it, it becomes SOOO much worse…

These tricks don’t always work, but they do for the most part.

I guess I should have said my strategy - typically what I would do would be to go up to my martial arts school & teach. That always puts me in a good mood.

However, recently that hasn’t helped because of some issues I have with a couple of people at the school. So then I end up even more stressed & everything.
