For many the month of May is the Month of Mary .

Perhaps we can create a thread of beauty , a thread choosing , from the treasures of the Church , icons , prayers , hymns , paintings , music , statues etc which have been used over the centuries to honour and portray Our Lady .

You may have memories of the part Mary has played in your faith journey which you want to share .

As we sing in a Lourdes hymn - - - - - - - -

To our needy world of today
Love and beauty you portray,
Showing the path to Christ we must trace.
Mary, our mother, hail, full of grace.

We need to encounter some of the beauty portrayed by Mary in a world which in many ways is pretty ugly .

I’ll kick off with the statue of Our Lady in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris , and with the Magnificat sung in Notre-Dame de Paris .

When I was young my family and I were part of the Blue Army ,we would have a procession down the street and say the rosary 🙂 It was very special to have Our Lady of Fatima statue in our homes, and neighbours coming to say the rosary tougher .
There’s a lovely big picture of Our Lady of Perpetual help at my parents ,it’s very old having been my grandma’s (who passed on before I was born) there all my life and I now have my own picture .
Thank you for the reminder and your links Rob!

Hubby brought me a wonderful our lady of Fatima as an early mother’s day gift and I got myself 3 books about Mary and Marion devotions

I like this Orthodox icon of Our Lady so much, I made it my CAF avatar 🙂. It’s called, “Queen of the Angels, Protectress of Los Angeles,” and it’s recently made. It shows Mary, the Holy Theotokos, guarding the city of Los Angeles, which happens to be my city. In fact, I worked in most of the high-rise buildings depicted in the icon. It’s nice to think of Our Lady watching over us.

Dear Rob,

Thanks for beginning a thread to “adorn” Mary. 🙂 Yesterday I posted also my desire to begin a series of threads on St. Louis de Montfort’s little book, “The Love of Eternal Wisdom”. It is in this book, I believe that he begins to receive from God the special Grace to see how Mary is the surest, the easiest and the quickest way to develop the Christ life in us.

That beginning post can be read HERE. I am beginning Chapter 1 today, and there are 17 chapters. The final Chapter in this little book is on “A Tender and True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin.” It is so important to honor the Mother of God as God honored her, and to do that we need to listen to the Word of God as the Father told us in the Transfiguration scene: “This is my Beloved Son, listen to Him”.

Mary is both Mother and Model for the Church. She kept and pondered all Jesus said and did in her heart. She heard and did His Truth on earth and so must we. Thanks again for drawing attention to Mary. As St. JPII said, “…Where the Mother is, there is the Son…” (Address to Legion of Mary, Oct. 1982)

This is my favourite icon of the narrative “Mary visits Elisabeth” and I can’t wait until May 31st when the Gospel reading is from Luke 1-39-56. Notice that our God is sucking his thumb.

I’m afraid I don’t.
But I love Madonna images from different cultures, especially because in her apparitions she “blends in” with the local people 🙂

I love being able to say this prayer for Easter season, though I admit to using it out of season too☺.

And it’s great for our May adornment, too.

This prayer-poem was popularized in the 1950s by Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Lovely Lady Dressed In Blue

Lovely Lady dressed in blue -------
Teach me how to pray!
God was just your little boy,
Tell me what to say!

Did you lift Him up, sometimes,
Gently on your knee?
Did you sing to Him the way
Mother does to me?

Did you hold His hand at night?
Did you ever try
Telling stories of the world?
O! And did He cry?

Do you really think He cares
If I tell Him things -------
Little things that happen? And
Do the Angels’ wings

Make a noise? And can He hear
Me if I speak low?
Does He understand me now?
Tell me -------for you know.

Lovely Lady dressed in blue -------
Teach me how to pray!
God was just your little boy,
And you know the way.

This is one of my favorite images of Mary. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)
