A traditional custom in May has been to give honour to Mary by crowning a statue of her , often with a crown made of flowers .

Some have said that such customs are a bit over the top . They detract from our commitment to the Lord Jesus . It could be seen as verging on idolatry . It’s all a bit sentimental and belongs to a different age .

I confess to having thought along those lines until I came to realise that such devotion to Mary is a sign of Christian maturity . I’m sure Mary , my loving Mother , has forgiven my immaturity , the meanderings of a rebel teen .

I’m all behind Popes John Paul II , Benedict and Francis now . Totus tuus

Koreans have been venerating Mary as the intercessor for peace in the Korean peninsula. This lovely drawing of Our Lady and the Child Jesus was dedicated for the peace of Korean peninsula. Every year, there are events of Catholics dedicating themselves in reciting the rosary for the unification of two Koreas.
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God!
 
Here’s another Asian Madonna and Child. This one is actually imprinted on the grave marker of one of the priests at our local Catholic cemetery, which is why it looks sort of weather-beaten. He was a Jesuit missionary priest who served in Taiwan for 20 years.

Mum used to recite this in prayers when we were young :blush:I still say some that I remember when I find praying more difficult (times of trouble)
 
This statue of The Madonna was covered in rosaries, placed by random people passing by.

Here’s another modern icon of Our Lady that’s quickly become one of my favorites. It’s called Our Lady of Recovery, invoking Mary’s intercession for all who struggle with addictions.

Prompted by your post I was led by Google to this prayer to Our Lady for healing , something which I am in need of - - - - - - -

Mary Immaculate, you have given yourself to us as Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. You have asked us to pray with confidence, and we will receive great graces. We know your compassion, because you saw your Son suffer and die for us. In your union with his suffering you became the mother of us all.

Mary, my mother teach me to understand my suffering as you do and to endure it in union with the suffering of Jesus. In your motherly love, calm my fears and increase my trust in God’s loving care.

According to God’s plan, obtain for me the healing I need. Intercede with your Son that I may have the strength I need to work for God’s glory and the salvation of the world.

Amen

In 1965 Pope Paul VI began his encyclical Mense Maio (The Month of May) writing ;

"The month of May is almost here, a month which the piety of the faithful has long dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. Our heart rejoices at the thought of the moving tribute of faith and love which will soon be paid to the Queen of Heaven in every corner of the earth. For this is the month during which Christians, in their churches and their homes, offer the Virgin Mother more fervent and loving acts of homage and veneration; and it is the month in which a greater abundance of God’s merciful gifts comes down to us from our Mother’s throne.

“.We are delighted and consoled by this pious custom associated with the month of May, which pays honour to the Blessed Virgin and brings such rich benefits to the Christian people. Since Mary is rightly to be regarded as the way by which we are led to Christ, the person who encounters Mary cannot help but encounter Christ likewise. For what other reason do we continually turn to Mary except to seek the Christ in her arms, to seek our Saviour in her, through her, and with her?”
