My mother is down for a visit and brought me my old second grade report card.
I thought people might like to hear what was covered in a traditional Catholic school education then:
The report card was issued at 7 weeks, 13 weeks, and first term (halfway through the year), then 7 weeks after that, 13 weeks after that, and second term (end of year.)
The first section had to do with Citizenship, Character and Health; the second with school subjects. Again, this is second grade.
The first listed various traits which were graded A, B, C, D and F: A indicates outstanding, B above average, C satisfactory, D improvement needed and F failure.
Cooperation: Respects rights of others, willingly joins others in work and play, is courteous and considerate toward others.
Self-Control: Usually thinks before acting; restrains hasty impulses.
Perseverance: Puts forth best effort; keeps on trying in spite of failure.
Courage: Attacks difficulties with confidence, is ready to acknowledge mistakes and made amends; does what is right regardless of remarks of companions.
Obedience: Cheerfully obeys rules and regulations both of Church and school; is at the right place at the right time ready for work; has work completed on time.
Orderliness: Keeps desk, books and other materials in good order; prepares and arranges work neatly.
Health Habits: Keeps face, hands, nails and teeth clean; is clean in habits of dress; sits, stands and walks correctly.
School subjects are graded in multiples of 5. (100 is given on rare occasions and only in the upper grades where this has actually been achieved on all tests given. In the lower grades, 95 is the highest mark given.) The passing grade is 70. An average below 70 is indicated by F.
In second grade the subjects were:
Religion
English: Oral
** Written**
** Reading**
** Spelling**
Social studies: History
** Geography**
** Civics**
Arithmetic
Science
Handwriting
Art
Music
Health Education
Finally, one was graded at the times above with:
Thoroughness in daily work
Attention during class
Home Study
Attendance was noted at the listed times as well. Finally, on the back of the card it was signed by the teacher, the principal, and one’s parents.
That card brought back a lot of happy memories.
