Hi there. At RCIA tonight, Father made a comment, “Vatican II is still being implemented.”

What does it mean when someone states that the changes of Vatican II have not been fully implemented yet? What exactly still needs implementing?

Thanks for any info-

Andrea

Its great to see you in the forums but can I just ask why you didn’t ask the priest what he meant when he said that?

Everything . The Spirit and the implementation of the reforms of Vatican II were meant to be a continuing work, with change and fluidity and responsiveness to peoples needs, etc being the goal. Vatican II is a perfect reflection of the mindset of the early to mid sixties, change renewal growth responsiveness, adaptation etc. In all likihood the changes of Vatican II will never be fully implementated, because people will always change and due to the ambiguity in the wording of a lot of Vatican II documents, change is not only anticipated and expected it is desired. The last thing the majority of the council members wanted was another Council of Trent where things were pretty much set in stone. No the breath of spring was in the air, and change was good, change is good and change will always be good.

😃 LOL, as I was typing I said to my husband we should have just asked him what he meant by it. With all the other questions going on (our topic was Holy Orders) we didn’t get back around to it. I guess I could go ahead and just ask him next week if he’s there.

Hopefully, he meant that it takes a while to impliment the teachings of a Council. The teachings of the Council of Trent weren’t implimented over night.

Many misinterpreted Vatican II as an “out with the old, in with the new” thing that “allows” for all sorts of absurdity. Once this foolishness has been set straight, Vatican II will be implimented.

Isn’t that just another way of saying relativism rules ?

Some liturgical points of Vatican II have been “anti-implemented,” such as saying that congregations should be able to sing the ordinary parts of the Mass in Latin.

Other things, though, like the greater participation of the laity in the Church’s mission to the world, have been given a start but are not yet completely understood. (For instance, the vision of Vatican II was not that lay people would become more involved in evangelization simply by becoming ‘lay ecclesial ministers.’ Catholic Answers is closer to that vision, an accountant sharing the Gospel with co-workers would probably be even closer.)

Pretty close. Wouldn’t you agree though? Not that everything is all right  , but that things are moving in the way I said?

Try reading the actual Council documents. What happened in the sixties was that people misinterpreted some of the documents either deliberately or they were ignorant with what they said. For example: Latin is supposed to be used some of the time during Mass. This very rarely happens. There are lots of reasons why, but basically there will not be another ecumenical council until ALL the reforms of the V2 are FULLY implemented. This has not happened yet; thus the reforms are still being implemented. Pope Benedict when asked if there would be another council (such as Vatican III), said basically what your priest stated.
