A voting question

Sorry if this is in the wrong area. “News” seemed more appropriate but I don’t have a link so I know it will be deleted.

We elect a Governor in our state this year. The Democratic candidate is pro-abortion all the way. The Republican candidate is hiding behind a statement to the likes of, it’s a US law that gives a woman the “right to choose” and due to that no changes can be made in our state. He then goes on to say that he would strongly council for adoption, is against late term abortions and believes abortion should be “safe”. It seems as though he is trying to appease both sides.

Does his lack of a concrete stance prohibit me from voting for this Republican candidate?
 
I would try the Moral Theology forum.

Sometimes, you have to settle for the candidate whose stance is the least morally repugnant. It just depends.
 
It sounds as though we may be in the same state. He speaks the same way about gay marriage, when asked about it. “That’s between them and God”. I think he is wording things as loosely as possible to get elected. Even saying that he wants abortions to be safe, could be his way of saying that he is against abortion, because no abortion is safe for all involved, obviously. I really get the impression that he is pro-life & family, but knows he won’t get elected being pro-life&pro-family, so he is wording things as liberally as he can get away with without outright saying his true stance.
 
It’s not as simple to say that elections consists of a pro-choice vs. a pro-life candidate. Perhaps the Republican candidate your referring to is a fiscal conservative and has no church affiliation or any real stance on abortion. I think abortion is a topic candidates would much rather avoid.

The governor is the chief executive, not the chief legislator. He can only sign what laws come before him, as submitted by the elected law makers (or voter initiatives, if your state has that system).

Sounds like neither candidate is particularly pro-life, and that one is being brutally honest, while the other is being deceptive.

I would concentrate on electing legislators who are pro-life, and opposing those, even not in your district that are as adamantly pro-abortion as your Democratic candidate for governor, or lacking the intellectual honesty and backbone of the Republican candidate for governor.
