A Wake-Up Call for America's Catholics

I certainly think all of this is a wake up call. I believe there will be a resurgence in Catholicism. People are tired of how loose things have gotten in this country when it comes to values.
 
I agree with the editorial, but I’m a little surprised. I watched an interview with S.E. Cupp, and she said she was an atheist. She said she was not a “militant” atheist however. but I’m like … huh?? Cal Thomas also editorialized on the denial of Eucharist to Kennedy, saying it was the right thing. Cal Thomas doesn’t even believe the Eucharist is the Eucharist or bishops are bishops.
 
The voting booth? That’s only one place. We need to be Catholic every day, not just Sunday. Mr. Kennedy appears to have fallen for some of the same things other Catholics have fallen for - a lack of discernment being one. Speaking generally, it appears that we allow others to set the tone for our lives. The Bible tells us not to follow the crowd in doing evil.

But, unless you want to end up with two or three divorces and living in an apartment with a 40 ounce beer and computer as your only friends, it’s time to do things the Catholic way.

The biggest problem has been the destruction of the proper social relationship between young men and young women. In Detroit, a man on TV, in response to a drug related shooting, said that “we need to sit down together at the dinner table again.” Nothing could be truer or simpler. Sit down with your family.

And the media has allowed itself to be prostituted and to present gravely immoral ‘lifestyle choices’ as entertainment. Turn the TV off. Make a life of your own centered on following God. Turn on Catholic radio. Father Ricardo has been a great inspiration to me. Read at least one page of the Bible daily. If all you’re going to allow into your head is trash, the less likely you will be thinking of doing Godly things.

There are still parks. You can still go for a walk. We all need a little more exercise and a little time away from the world.

You are quite right. I think part of the problem is that so many people have gotten away from the Catholic faith or were never properly taught to begin with that its seems so daunting trying to re-learn stuff. LIke in our family for example, my husband grew up with a remote in one hand and atari in the other. He was baptized, and that was the last time he ever saw a church…unless someone died or got married. I got a very broken religious education, and the Vatican just seemed so far away and I felt so small in it and didn’t quite understand how I fit into the grand scheme of God’s church. So you can imagine that when we met…whew, I had quite a bit of work cut out for me! 😃

I konw Catholics searching for answers. Unfortunantly, Americans have become entangled with this capitilistic culture and material obsession and need for power and rights that they are slowly loosing themselves in it and they don’t even realize it. Celebrity drug overdose is a perfect example. They are so lost in that world that when they are not it everyday, they don’t know who they are outside of it. Its like a drugie or alcoholic. Well, you can’t tell them they are a drugie or alcoholic until they first admit it to themselves. The same is here. Catholics have to admit to themselves first the sins they have commited. They have to feel guilty and want redemption. Only then will their hearts change.

The battle lines are being drawn. Which side of the line do you want to be on?

SE Cupp has stated it perfectly and as clear as can be. This is THE CATHOLIC MOMENT in America. It has long troubled me and not more than in the last Presidential Election. My parish was deeply divided and to the point where resignations ensued. I resigned from teaching CCD because there was only one catechist who was NOT supporting Barack Obama for President- ME!! Our Choir Director/Music Teacher also resigned and our Pastor said nothing and continues to say nothing about Abortion or the healthcare bill and the Bishops stand against it!!

I applaud Bishop Tobin and only hope that the rest of our Shepherds follow his path. The Manhattan Declaration is also a step in the right direction and should bolster support for any Bishop to stand up and speak the TRUTH!!!

The Church lost a lot of credibility due to the Priest Scandal but can certainly regain its status and be the Shepherds they were chosen to be. 58% of American Catholics voted for this murderous President who is seeking to divide the Church in America. He has loaded his cabinet and administration with Pro-abortion Catholics hoping to do exactly what Patrick Kennedy is attempting to do- create a schism Church and divide the catholic vote permanently. The Bishops must speak up forcefully and begin to publicly Excommunicate these politicians who refuse to repent and continue to promote scandal and schism.

This is the CATHOLIC MOMENT in America!!

The Church is slowly turning this around thanks to the bishops appointed by Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Thanks to EWTN. Thanks to preachers, writers, and thinkers like the late Fr. Father Neuhaus, George Weigel, Michael Novak, etc.

We failed though because we wanted to be liked and accepted more than we wanted to proclaim the truth of Christ. We turned a blind eye toward heresy and apostasy, dumbed down homilies, degraded liturgies, and disrespected the sacraments, especially the Blessed Sacrament itself.

The key is to stand in unity with the Holy Father and the Bishops.

Great post! You are exactly right! The American Catholic Church tried to become more mainstream, ie. Protestant-feel good but lost its own identity. There are some churches that look so plain you couldn’t tell if it was Catholic or not. Thank God for JP the Great and now Benedict XVI!! The Church is fulfilling its mission once again!
