For what purpose John?
Why to worship Yahweh, of course, but this was in violation of the Jewish Law.

It looks like the sin was because they went to Dan and Bethel. Not because of the idols or what-not. Notice it said, they put these calves in Dan and Bethel. This led to sin.

Also, it looks like the new preisthood and the temples in high places were ways in which the Israelites were heaping sins upon their sins.

:
The people were sinful because they went to Bethel and Dan to worship God, .
Yes! and in what manner did the worship God?
The calves John the calves! Like I’ve been saying all along these are meant to be YAHWEH

Yes, but they are incomplete and they are not following the Words of God (worship in Jerusalem), and that’s where the sin came in. Then they replaced the Levite priests with priests of their own.

I just went to Mass between these last two posts, and I thought, “Hmmm, I drive by places of worship where the altar has been taken out. There is no ‘Clean Oblation’ being offered up from east to west, as Malachi prophesied. The succession of the priests in these places of worship is not handed down through the laying on of hands, traced all the way back to the Apostles”.

It’s almost like Dan and Bethel have been repeated throughout the world!!! Deja’ Vu!

Sorry, I just had to throw that one out, Simon.

I just ran across some quotes of the OT that verify our position on where the Israelites heart were when they created the golden calf.

Ezekiel, Chapter 20: 2-3 & 7-8
Then the word of the LORD came to me: Son of man, speak with the elders of Israel and say to them… Throw away, each of you, the detestable things that have held your eyes; do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt: I am the LORD, your God. But they rebelled against me and refused to listen to me; none of them threw away the detestable things that had held their eyes, they did not abandon the idols of Egypt. Then I thought of pouring out my fury on them and spending my anger on them there in the land of Egypt;
St. Stephen Acts 7:39-41 -
"Our ancestors were unwilling to obey him; instead, they pushed him aside and in their hearts turned back to Egypt, saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will be our leaders. As for that Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.’ So they made a calf in those days, offered sacrifice to the idol, and reveled in the works of their hands."
Joshua, speaking to the Israelites who had crossed the River Jordan and into the Promised Land in Joshua 24:14 -
"Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve him completely and sincerely. Cast out the gods your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
It seems Israel was still serving the gods (notice they say gods - plural), so the calf was just a focal point for Israel’s sin.

Hi

I think Aaron did not make the golden calf. It is mistake of the scribe to ascribe it to him.

Thanks

OK, I’ll bite. Why do you think that? Do you know more about this event then the scribe, who is presumed to have been there (Moses) ?
