Doesn’t the Vatican only have observer status anyway? So the Papal ambassador to the UN doesn’t even have voting rights.
Although, an interesting thing we discussed in my world politics class last quarter was what should happen to Kosovo in the UN. The scenario played out thusly:
Kosovo gets full membership in the UN, much as both Germanies had it during the Cold War though neither Berlin or Frankfort recognized each other. Suddenly Taiwan, which has been denied membership, even observer status, since 1949 must get it because there is now a precedent with Kosovo. Likewise, S. Ossetia, Abkhazia, Transnistria, and all the other
de facto independent states have to receive it. But what about the Vatican? Same thing–observer status would have to be upgraded to full voting membership. And then what happens? The Vatican represents the most widespread network of constituents in the world and one of the highest populations of any member in the UN.
For that reason alone, my professor said “Let’s hope Kosovo never attains their dream of full, internationally-respected statehood.” I, being opposed to Kosovar independence altogether, said: “Let them have it. Us Mary-worshippers will stamp out your liberalism with our jackboots of grace and mercy!”
But, really, in all seriousness, this woman is a joke and should be ignored.
