Hello all,

I have stumbled across another issue. I was first discussing with a friend about abortion and he told me some of his opinions that challenged me. My friend said that abortion should be acceptable if a woman is raped, because that child will now remind her even more of the torment and pain of being raped. How an I refute this claim? My friend also claims that abortion should also be acceptable if the father runs off and now the mother has no support. My friend said that it is not right to let the child live because we are making that child suffer, because the mother will put the child in a foster home, and the living conditions of foster homes are atrocious. What are your thoughts on this?

The second question I have to ask, involves birth control and contraception.

My friend claimed that the catholic church caused millions of people in Africa to die of HIV due to the church promoting abstinence over contraception. is this true? My friend also said that the state of Mississippi has the highest rate of teen pregnancy, because the education system teaches abstinence instead of safe sex. We had another discussion about forced abortion in China under the “One Child Policy”. My friend said that the abortions were wrong, but it was acceptable because Chinese families at the time were having more than 10 children, and if the government never imposed the “one child” policy, there would be too much people for china to take care of. My friend believes that after each child the man should have a vasectomy. Is a vasectomy sinful? Now my last question. Is contraception acceptable to prevent overpopulation? My frend claims that it is impossible to love more than 3 children and a spouse because there are too much kids to look after. what are your thoughts? I’m trying to understand my friends viewpoint, but I think it is harsh to view each individual as a statistic instead of an individual as a beautiful creation with a soul. Advice anyone?

Wow, your friend is…well, the type I would not want for a friend.
  1. overpopulation is a MYTH
  2. large families are not evil. My brother has 4…ranging from 15 years old…down to 6 years old. Both of my parents came from families of 7 children, so they each have six siblings.
3)contraception is often used for selfish reasons
  1. deliberate sterilization is a bad idea
  2. that reason for abortion sounds like a planned parenthood talking point

To add on:
  1. Foster care is not the only, or most likely option, for a mother who has no support from her child’s father. Not only do many women raise children by themselves very successfully, there is also the option of adoption or enlisting help from other family members.
  2. As the oldest of 5, the point about not being able to love more than three children is horribly insulting to my parents as well as to my cousins with 7 and 9 kids!!

As the father of 7 and the youngest of 5 siblings I agree 1000%. I know people with 11 kids that appear to lavish more affection on their children than a dear friend that has two kids.

I once heard a priest, who was the youngest of 10, say that his parents told him that love is not something divided, but that grows exponentially. I would have to agree. I originally only wanted 1 or 2 kids, but as each of my kids were born I found a greater and greater capability to love.

So your friend believes that, if someone reminds a person of a horrific event, that person may kill them? Even if they are totally innocent of the event?

I lost a friend to drunk driving once. If I saw a person who was a passenger in the drunks car, could I kill them? Or how about the ambulance driver that took them away, could they be killed too?

hey. good point.

I’ll say this: A vast majority of abortions are for the “oops.” Contraception is mainly used to prevent pregnancies and STDs (how many women take it the pill for actual health reasons? Tiny %), but just in case the “oops” happen enter abortion.

The overpopulation talk is BS.

So when advocates for “choice” talk about bodily autonomy they’re just speaking about nipping the baby when the ABC fails. That’s basically it. They want the fatty foods without gaining the weight. They want the respect without earning it. They want the dignity without any actions of sacrifice.
