I would have rather avoided a new thread, for this topic is most unpleasant, but I do want to bring this forth to your consideration.
Last week I spoke to a couple of people (one from a “victim advocacy center”, the other from a pro-abortion feminist group), and both were (the former less, the latter more) upset at me, and tried to “stun” me with the question: “do you really stand against abortion even in case of rape?”
While of course I was, and I explained calmly why in a way that left them with no decent reply, something about their question - a question we read and hear all over the place as if it was the one good reason to be pro-choice - had been bothering me quite a bit.
After a week, I finally decided to check the numbers, do the math.
According to this website, “there is an average of 207,754 victims of rape and sexual assault each year” and “17.7 million American women have been victims” (not clear from which year the statistics begins). " According to medical reports, the incidence of pregnancy for one-time unprotected sexual intercourse is 5%", but let us go as far as to presume 100%, so 207754 conceived babies.
According to this website, “an estimated 1.3 million abortions are performed annually”.
The numbers just don’t match. There’s an additional 1 million 92 thousand 246 abortions unaccounted for (or 84%).
If we use the 5% medical estimate, the amount unaccounted for is 1.289 million over 1.3 (nearly 99% of abortions).
Draw your own conclusions.
