One thing I found odd about the excommunicable offense; abortion is listed to give you automatic excommunication. However, the murder of somebody who is already born is not listed there. Why are you allowed to stay in the church if you just plain murder somebody, but you can’t if you have an abortion?

In the case of abortion one kills someone who has no recourse to self-defense.
The decision to murder is cold and without reason in terms of the victim’s rights.

I can’t say that this is the reasoning behind Church Law but it makes sense to me.
Even who have thus excommunicated themselves have recourse to Reconciliation.
The stance of the Church regarding the sin of abortion makes clear the gravity of this sin.

I had heard part of the reason abortion was worse then murder in this regard was because of the relationship between murderer and victim. They are mother and child, and aboriton is putting a destructive wedge right between what should be the most tender, loving and selfless relationship.

With that said, I think there is an element to self defence, as I think if you murdered your whole family you dont’ even get excommunicated.

Prohibition on abortion is the Church’s teaching. She also sees the great gravity of it.

By willfully engaging in this act one willfully disobeys the Church and as a result, being separated from her. Thus one is excommunicated by default. One can say the same about other sins too but abortion is a sin being proclaimed by the Church while other sins are already found in the scripture. One is either with the Church or without, thus the excommunication because one chooses to be without.

Just my two cents.

Dear friends,my opinion may not be right, but I do as The Church tell us to do,that is not hard, because all we need to do is to follow Christ, what is in the Catechism is nothing more then The Bible explained for us. I can’t help look at it that way, should I try,I don’t know. God bless.

God is merciful. I thought that my abortions were too grave to be forgiven but I was wrong.

I thought the prohibition against abortion was simply an extension of the prohibition against murder.

“I would like to say a special word to women who have had an abortion. The Church is aware of the many factors which may have influenced your decision, and she does not doubt that in many cases it was a painful and even shattering decision. The wound in your heart may not yet have healed. Certainly what happened was and remains terribly wrong. But do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope. Try rather to understand what happened and face it honestly.”

“If you have not already done so, give yourselves over with humility and trust to repentance. The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. You will come to understand that nothing is definitely lost and you will also be able to ask forgiveness from your child, who is now living in the Lord.”

“With the friendly and expert help and advice of other people, and as a result of your own painful experience, you can be among the most eloquent defenders of everyone’s right to life. Through your commitment to life, whether by accepting the birth of other children or by welcoming and caring for those most in need of someone to be close to them, you will become promoters of a new way of looking at human life.”

Pope John Paul II, The Gospel of Life

Huh? So if someone guns down a person in cold blood on a street corner without time for self defense, the murderer gives reason of the innocent victim’s right to not be shot down?

Maybe because the overwhelming majority of people accept the fact that killing a born person is wrong, but not as many understand that abortion is also wrong the church is trying to send a message that it is indeed just as bad. Not really sure though.
