Hi,
My friend who is in a similar condition as you is also a paediatric nurse so she obviously wanted to take care of children and is a sad situation for her. I pray that you will find the right path for you. Organisations like Life and the priests will take things at your own pace fingers crossed so if you don’t feel ready for anything like a service then it will be when you feel ready. Other things I can think of is going into a Church and light a candle for the baby you lost. I did this with my friends and a candle is to remember a dead person. Or to wear an angel badge or angel pendant as I think all babies that are lost in the womb become angels and are in heaven. This is what me and my friend did and I also had a miscarriage so I know what it feels like to lose a baby.

My friend decided to write her thoughts down and this helped her and this is what Life advised. She also wanted to publish it but I don’t think she did. So you could keep a journal on your spiritual progress. Wear a crucifix or cross to remember that Jesus died for you and Jesus loves you and your baby and the rest of your family. My friend also decided to sponsor a child in the Third World. This took her time to get over the abortion and she spent about year having counselling once or twice a month. Some women decide to name their baby when they come to terms with the fact that it is a baby that they have lost. I find listening to religious music helpful, especially Taize when I’m feeling a bit spiritually down. My friend also bought some prayer books and read prayers aswell as self help books.

Anything that helps.

Thank you for all of your advice budgie 🙂 I do not think that I am struggling as much as your poor friend was/is, but I had my ‘termination’ over 2 years ago now so the worst has passed, I still wonder to this day what my child would have looked like and what she’d be doing now. I kept a diary in the early days of how I felt/ how I was but stopped doing that nearly a year ago, it upsets me to re-read some of the entries that I wrote, she always had a name though, right from the very first entry. I shall light a candle for her. Thank you.

I am pleased to inform you that I spoke with my priest (who is a canon lawyer) and I am not excommunicated. Also, I attended a Rachel’s Vineyard retreat this past weekend, and it was a life-changing experience for me. I would recommend it to anyone who is suffering from the grief, pain and guilt that comes after an abortion, whether you are Catholic or not. You have no idea what a healing experience it can be until you experience it firsthand.

Excommunication is a canonical penalty imposed on Catholics in order to help them see the gravity of their offense and seek reconciliation with the Church and pardon for their sins. Non-Catholics cannot be excommunicated.

.
this is not a complete answer… meaning that is not the only reason for ex-communication.

people are excommunicated because they are not “worthy” to receive Communion due to their grave sin(s)… 1 Cor 11:22

I’m so glad that you aren’t excommuicated!!! And that you are feeling more at peace now. I am sorely tempted to go to one once I’ve worked out where the nearest one to me is.
