Thanks to the Obama at Notre Dame controversy I was able to talk to my non practicing protestant pro-choice mother about the pro-life position on abortion. The talk went something like this:

note: my step brother is living with Vicky and her family

mom: If Vicky’s mom, dad, and her retarded sister had been aborted then that would be three people the state would not have support.

me: Would it be ok to kill them now to save the state some money?

mom: Of course not.

me: Why not?

mom: They’ve been born.

me: Does God give a person a soul at birth or conception or some time in between?

mom: I don’t know.

me: Then shouldn’t we play it safe by not aborting a baby?

mom: [With the “end of discussion” tone of voice mothers have.] It’s just different.

It seems like her heart is closed to accepting pro-life views. I also find she puts more stock in her emotions then logic. I am praying for her but I need to know how should I go about getting her to accept that abortion is wrong?

P.S.

Please don’t respond about how my mom was mean in saying what she did about my Vicky’s family.

Thanks

From the conversation that you’ve posted, it seems to me that you are doing the right things.
As long as you keep being rational and consistent when addressing this topic with her, it’s up to her in God. You’ve placed the ball in her field, the only thing you have to do is make sure that it stays there, and that she is aware that it’s there.

Well if she’s a Christian(vague term nowadays as we can see), then all you need to do is come up with an argument proving that an unborn baby is human, abortion is murder therefore it is wrong to abort. There’s a few ways to go about it via bible; one I like very much is Leviticus 14: 11 “For the life of the flesh is in the blood…” As I recall the unborn babies blood is seperate from the mother’s, thus not part of her body. While there is no thou shall not abort command, God does command not to kill(murder). If you’ve proved that a unborn baby is human, then it can be truthfully said that, that commandment applies for the baby.

mom: They’ve been born.

You: would it have been OK to kill them 10 years ago?

Mom (I hope): Of course not.

You: How about the day after they were born?

Mom: No…

You: Why is it wrong to kill them then, but not 48 hours earlier?

And take it back from there…

Praying for you, and for your Mom’s conversion,

Ruthie

Pray the rosary! The mother of God was just that, a mother. She said yes to life, literally!
Christ said: “I am the way, the truth and the life” And Mary gave birth to Him, she gave birth to life! Pray the rosary, ask for help from the mother of life. Many miracles have happened because of a single rosary.

It is hard-- I have a lot of vehemently pro-choice people in my life-- but have compassion. Your mom is obviously more devoted to the State and its burdens/priorities than the lives of people (unborn people, anyway). Maybe she doesn’t have a very robust view of her citizenship to the kingdom of God and puts first her allegiance to the place where she pays taxes! But don’t we all fall into that on some issue or another like war or poverty if we are not watching ourselves?

Pray for your mom, fight the good fight by being an example to the truth. If her heart is inclined towards God she will come around, especially if she has you as a sounding board for her beliefs.

It can be difficult, I’ve definitely had to deal with pro-choice people in my life too. Try talking to her, and pray for her.

Her abrupt end to the discussion means you struck a nerve. If the subject comes up again, and you feel that your life won’t be in danger:D, keep working backwards toward “life begins at conception” by bringing up partial-birth abortion.
It seems like her heart is closed to accepting pro-life views. I also find she puts more stock in her emotions then logic. I am praying for her but I need to know how should I go about getting her to accept that abortion is wrong?
Sometimes there are reasons for one’s heart to be closed that maybe a son or daughter shouldn’t know. Be mindful and respectful of that fact.

:tiphat: for discussing the subject with her, though.

Keep praying for her. It seems to me that you’re doing everything right. Pro-choice people are difficult to reason with sometimes, because their emotions tend to override logic. Keep talking to her about it, and perhaps, with God’s help, she will see the truth.

She doesn’t sound that nice to be honest. She sounds like she’s wishing people dead. It may be that she’s suffering from depression and needs prayers.
