I don’t think there is any dispute that in some cases, the embryo that results from the fertilization of an egg is abnormal in that either an embryo may not even form, or that it may be so abnormal that it is not sustainable (resulting in a miscarriage in either case). Does the Church teach that EVERY fertilized egg results in life that is endowed with a soul – or are certain things requisite in the embryo before one can say it really is a protected human life? This question implicates baptism as well in that if an embryo is not capable of sustaining life, or the fertlization does properly result in an embryo, then is there a soul that needs saving?

Thoughts? This came to mind in reading recent news headlines of part-human/part-cow embryos.

Abortion is always wrong. There are no exceptions. So called “mercy killing” is also always forbidden. Death must come naturally.
