In the book of revelation it talks about those who were slain asking God how long it will be before their deaths are avenged. I know it refers to martyrs, but could it also apply to the victims of abortion?

I would think that a ‘martyr’ is someone that died for his/her faith in God.
I don’t think the murdered children of abortion would fit into this.

Pray for those mothers considering abortion to realize that all life is precious.

Yes we need to. For the record, but not to argue, I did not mean to imply that they were martyrs in the traditional sense. They are victims of a war against life, and ultimately against God. In that sense they could be considered martyrs, killed because they represent life and God.

Note that the Holy Innocents of Bethlehem, slaughtered by Herod, are considered martyrs.

I see what you mean!
You’ve swayed me.

I’ve read (and I hate using that phrase when I can’t put my finger on documentation) that the Holy Innocents died for/because of Jesus, which is why they’re martyrs. Any connection between the Holy Innocents and children murdered in abortion, this article argued, was flawed because of that point.

Now, to the OP, your theory works only if the souls of those slaughtered in abortion go to Heaven. Personally, I think they do, and certainly on this subject the Holy Father has encouraged us to trust in God’s mercy, but we don’t know for certain what their fate is. We know from St. Stephen, the protomartyr, that those slain because of their faith in Our Lord go to Heaven, but it is silent on the fate of unbaptized children.
