StJeanneDArc:
Do you see where your reasoning leads? You say that you “respect a parents decision to do that” [abort an autistic child] and then in the next sentence that it is not acceptable to abort a baby with a cleft lip. What you are doing is putting yourself in the position to judge which abnormalities deserve death. Why should we agree with you and not with the mother who wants to abort a baby with cleft lip? Why not abort a baby who’s the wrong sex? The wrong race?
You dont have to agree. But a child who is the ‘wrong’ race or sex or has a cleft lip can easily live a perfectly normal life without being a burden to anyone. A severely autistic child will probably need lifelong care and cause serious financial and emotional problems for the family, as well as greatly impair that childs life.

So will a parent or grandparent with dementia. Should they be killed, too?

I never meant to offend you as the boy I know has had a tremendous effect on my life. Im glad he’s here…but what Im saying is, I respect his parents right to not have had him. A doctor and a lawyer, they are barely making the 60k tuition a year to send him to a special school that is his only hope. Its been really hard on his sister whos embarrassed to have friends over because he takes off his clothes and screams. His parents are devastated and Ive seen what its done to the family. Do i think all autistic kids should be aborted? No. Many make a positive contribution to society. But I do respect a parents decision to do that and completely understand it. I do not agree with aborting a baby with a cleft lip.
You really should re-read your statement here. PLEASE.

They are sometimes embarrassed over his behavior so you respect their right to not have had him?

We’ve all been embarrassed over our kids behavior - and I have an “NT” child (term for neuro typical, or ‘normal’ kid) and an autistic one. They’ve both done stuff to embarrass me. And yea, kids are expensive - especially ones who need special help. But it is our DUTY to care for those less fortunate, especially if they are our blood. It is not for us tojust kill them

Yes, Autistic kids are difficult.

But don’t we all have our crosses to bear?

I am so eternally greatful that Jesus didn’t say, You know, this is too difficult, I quit, you guys are on your own.

Maybe we could learn something from Him.

You said “Do I think ALL autistic kids should be aborted. No.” But that implies that some should be. Who’s going to decide that? Which kids are worth it and which aren’t?

And who gets to decide?

I now know why God gave me this child to care for, and not you. This is just sad. No, it’s not perfect, but these kids do have value. I believe that the adversity we face (both the children and those who care for them) really and truly teaches us something about ourselves, about life, about others. You see them as a burden, I see him as a blessing.

OK, so what do you do when the “perfectly normal” child suffers brain damage and does become a burden?

What do you do when the doctors and technicians mistakenly diagnosis a severely autistic child as being normal?

Don’t you see where your reasoning leads you? If you can kill a child before it’s born, why not do it afterwards? Are you in favor of creating some kind of laundry list of defects that justify killing the child?

Mommy, I believe that siamesecat is still a teenager living at home with her parents.

That is quite possibly the cheapest reason for abortion I have ever heard. Cleft lips can be dealt with, they are not life-threatening. Sounds like somebody was scared to have a child that was perfect and opted not to deal with it. That is disgusting

How would you understand their decision to kill their child? One of my cousins is autistic, and while she may require more care than her six siblings, we all still loves her. She has been a blessing to my entire family. Now, as for my cousins dealing with her behavioral issues, they have made it crystal clear to their friends that their sister comes first, and if they are true friends, they can accept her behavior. How is it justification to kill a child that is not perfect? I suppose if that were true, then I’d be dead right now, so I wouldn’t be here to question your stance…but maybe you wouldn’t be here to have a stance, either.
