A. Abortion is a Mortal Sin.

B. Supporting Abortion in any form is a Vineal Sin if not a Mortal Sin.

C. You make payments to your Medical Insurance Company.

D. Your Medical Insurance Company pays for Abortions.

E. Therefore you are paying for abortions.

F. It is irrelvant that your individual policy does not cover/pay for Abortion. Because you are making payments to an institution that pays for Abortions.

G. What do you you now?

H. Is Purgatory enough to get you to the pearly gates, especially since you perform this sin Willingly each month.

By this logic we should never buy anything and be totally self-sufficent because somewhere at least one employee of the company we are giving our money to will be buying contraceptives or drugs or paying for an abortion with that money. By buying medical insurance you are not paying for abortions. You are paying for your own insurance. You are in no way morally culpable for any abortion by having medical insurance.

BTW I’m English so we don’t have a medical insurance system like in the US.

Medical Insurance is a choice.
A choice to PAY BLOOD MONEY to an ENTITY that DIRECTLY PAYS FOR THE KILLING OF THE UNBORN.

Strawman arugment. Can you provide another example of buying something of a company whose sole purpose of paying for abortion is to save the company money?
By buying medical insurance you are not paying for abortions. You are paying for your own insurance.
A great attempt at rationalizing it away. :clapping:
It does not detract from the fact that you are paying money to an entity whose sole function in directly paying for abortions is for maintaining profit margins.
You are in no way morally culpable for any abortion by having medical insurance.
Are you 100% sure? If voting for a pro-choice candidate makes one cupable, then paying money monthly to an institution that pays for abortions is duo-deca cupable.

One may be off the hook then. Maybe I should be come English.

I’m curious how this balances out…for example, you do have an obligation to take care of yourself and your family. In this country most medical care is out of reach if you don’t have insurance, especially if you have any sort of serious or chronic illness. And an insurance policy that doesn’t pay for abortion may not always be available. If it’s a choice between having an insurance policy that covers abortion and leaving your family without insurance, what do you do? Would it change if you had a child with a chronic illness that you couldn’t afford otherwise?

I’m not ‘rationalising it away’. I’m stating a fact. You are essentially comparing buying medical insurance to giving someone some money and saying ‘go get an abortion with this’. It’s not the same thing.

Perhaps I am thinking too much from a mentality of a country that doesn’t have a system like yours. Would you mind clarifying for me exactly how your insurance system works? Because it could be that it is different from how I am thinking it is and that could make a big difference.

Also, this is something related that I’ve been thinking about recently: in the UK abortion is completely legal. That isn’t about to change. We do not have an insurance system, we have a tax funded national heath system. All UK tax-payers pay tax that funds it. However the NHS has abortion services and also provides free contraceptives. How morally culpable would you say UK Catholics are for those things. I don’t actually pay taxes, I’m a student, but I have been wondering this.

I just voted without really reading the post and so I had to vote the first answer. 🙂

I picked “A”. I have health insurance through my employer and they cover ABCs and abortions. I need my health insurance, and private insurance would be too costly. It would be irresponsible of me to drop my insurance all because I can’t control the actions of others who take advantage of those benefits.

I don’t believe the Magisterium has made any pronouncements to this effect. And they certainly haven’t given lay people the ability to declare what is and isn’t a mortal sin. Sorry.

I suggest you learn what the Church actually teaches on such matters. Your assumptions are completely incorrect.

Goodbye.

Why do you think the “purpose of paying for abortion” is relevant? You didn’t mention anything about the purpose earlier, so why are you bringing it up now? The argument made by PerfectTiming is a good one, and you failed to answer it. So let me ask you again. How can you justify paying anybody you don’t know well for anything? Anyone could use the money you paid them for immoral purposes, and some probably do. Medical Insurance is not unique in this regard.

Again, the profit motive does not make the payment and more or less immoral, so I don’t know why you keep mentioning it. What if the sole function in making the payments was to fund an orphanage? Would that make it OK in your mind?

Bottom line is your conclusions are unsupportable.

Personally paying for such coverage when you have no other reasonable choice is not going to be mortally sinful. Supporting initiatives that put people in such a position could be.
Therefore, they are guilty of scandal who establish laws or social structures leading to the decline of morals and the corruption of religious practice, or to "social conditions that, intentionally or not, make Christian conduct and obedience to the Commandments difficult and practically impossible."87 This is also true of business leaders who make rules encouraging fraud, teachers who provoke their children to anger,88 or manipulators of public opinion who turn it away from moral values.

A. A tax cut returns money to people that would not have otherwise had it.

B. Some of those people get abortions.

C. Tax cuts fund abortions.

D. Irrelevant that people don’t use their refund check to get an abortion, money is fungible.

E. Supporting tax cuts is a venial, if not mortal, sin.

Its a matter of how direct the participation in evil is. There is a difference between actually murdering someone, being the guy who drove the car that transported the guy to do the killing, and being the guy who sold the gun to the guy who murdered someone. The more direct involvement in a sin there is the less possible it is to justify it.

Why does a Medical Insurance Company pay for abortions?

Economics 101.

The cost of an average abortion is about 373 dollars.
What is $373 compared to cost of medical care for a child from conception to age when the child is no longer insurable.

Just for starters, the Vaginal Delivers costs $5000 to $8000.
Cesarean delivery costs more then $12,000.

373 is just more cheaper then 5000 alone.

What becomes the Business decision then based on Economics 101?

There are altenatives.

There are at least 3 Christian oriented medi-share plans out there. I investigated three and asked if they pay for abortions. All 3 said “Absolutely Not”

You do have a choice.

I investigated the following:

chministries.org
medi-share.org

YOU DO HAVE A CHOICE!

The Catholic Church has a choice as well. They could start they own Medi-Share Insurance Company.

There are choices and solutions to pursue.

Just how narrow is the gate to heaven?

One willingly pays money to an institution that pays for abortion.

let’s do the numbers game

The avearge insurance premium paid each month for family coverage is $414.
news.ehealthinsurance.com/pr/ehi/how-much-does-health-insurance-218305.aspx

The average cost of an abortion is $373
infoplease.com/ipa/A0904509.html
Are you comparing the $414 with the $373? That’s apples and oranges. The two numbers would be comparable only if every family got an abortion every month. The fact is very little of your insurance premium goes for abortions, percentage wise.

Why are you continuing to bring up the motivation for covering abortions? That motivation has no bearing on your so-called paradox.

If you think these are alternatives to medical insurance, you are very wrong. As explained on the mychristiancare.org website, this is not insurance. It does not promise any payment for medical bills. It is entirely voluntary. It is like throwing yourself on the mercy of a charity. Not very many people would find this course of action giving them peace of mind.
