I’m in college right now, and I signed up to be part of the pro-life club, and a group dedicated to assisting homeless people. I’m not sure it will happen, but there’s the possibility of the two overlapping, and me having to choose one group over the other. If so, what choice should I make? Is there a definitive “right way” to go? Advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am not seeing the conflict. If it is a matter of limited time and resources work with the apostolate that more closely matches your current interests, schedule and abilities.

As you get more involved, you may find one group fits your schedule better, or has responsibilities you feel particularly suit your strengths or interests.

If you are asking if one is more “Catholic” or approved than the other, No. Both are important, worthy apostolates. If it comes down to a scheduling conflict, you could choose based soley on your schedule or work load.

No, there is no one “right way” to go. We are all called to serve using our talents. Where and how you serve will change throughout your life.

Prayerfully discern where you feel you are called to serve at this time, if you have to choose only one.

Mind you I was never being apart of a groups like this.

Why confine yourself to just one club?

Why not go for both? Knowing collage can be very hectic schedule being apart of two clubs instead of one can be more “effective” at doing more good. Just more options. Plus you want to avoid singling out one mission.

Ideally, I’ll be able to do both. The schedules might wind up conflicting though, in which case I’ll have to choose one over the other. Hoping that doesn’t happen, though.

If the group dedicated to the homeless is not a “Catholic” group on Campus it may give you a chance to soflty envagelize to others that are not “pro-life”. Many liberal and/or non-Christian students, with ‘good intentions’ get involved with such activities. So in many ways choosing the homeless group may be a way to serve Christ in a fuller way, just don’t let others’ compassion for the homeless sway you on your pro-life stance. Pray about it and walk boldly with the Lord. - Just my thoughts. If you can find the time do both if you feel the Lord’s calling to do so.

Oh! Deciding between the two when they conflict…

The lord makes it pretty evident when one needs more help than another.

Recent advise I gave somone about choosing between two groups was “go where you are most needed”.

Follow your heart and you can’t go wrong. If you start thinking about it too much you are probably not listening to it.

Lead with your heart and not the mind.

Maybe when the times conflict you could alternate between which group meeting you would have to miss, and also take into account how important that particular meeting is, etc.

I wanted to post to encourage you to do both, even if you have to miss a meeting here or there, because I think that you will learn a lot about the “big picture” if you are involved in both groups.

One of the challenges sometimes heard from people whose consciences bother them about pro-Life is something like, “well, how are we going to PAY for all these poor people having so many children?” I’ve met people who really have said abortion is sometimes the answer in these cases. I wasn’t quick enough on me feet to respond to them at the time, but now I would say simply that it is better to be alive and poor than dead. That’s really the bottom line. But having said that, the obvious next step is tackling the problem of poverty and helping poor people really feel valued.

Being involved in real-life solutions to poverty that value life will enable you to more precisely advocate for the most good in the world. God bless you for considering both forms of involvement - you have my admiration and prayers!

Let’s imagine I go out and get drunk. I know I shouldn’t, but hey, I’ll do it anyway.

Then let’s imagine I get in my car and drive home. I know I shouldn’t, but hey, I’ll do it anyway.

Now let’s imagine I hit someone. He’s injured, but alive. He saw my license plate, so he can identify me. He can have me arrested, sue me, and on and on. I could wind up in poverty over this.

So I turn around and run over him again.

Now let’s imagine I and my girl friend go out and get drunk and have sex. We know we shouldn’t, but hey, we do it anyway. She gets pregnant. If she has the baby, I’ll have to support it, and on and on.

Get the picture?

If it really comes down to it, I’d choose working for the pro-life cause. Remember, abortion is inherently evil.
