Someone told me today he believed the only good reason for abortion was if the mother’s life was in danger. In a type of situation like that is it permissible ? I don’t mean when there can be a C-Section. But the mother will die, baby or her. I don’t see especially nowadays these situation coming up very often. He also asked about murder. I said if someone has to kill someone to defend themselves, I wouldn’t think that would be murder. Just killing someone though would be intrinsically evil. Am I right ? I thought there was NO excuse for abortion.

The Church has repeatedly affirmed that direct abortion is intrinsically evil. It may never be done for any reason whatsoever. Unborn children cannot be considered aggressors because of factors beyond their control.

Indirect abortion can be licit to save the mother’s life.

I always thought the Church taught that if the mother’s life is in danger then an abortion is allowed. Where did you hear that she can’t under any circumstances?

I was listening to someone of you tube. He said this. But he wasn’t clergy. He did mention Clement, Didache, Tertullian. and a few others that spoke on this.

While books and movies love the plot line, the truth is with modern medicine in the developed world, there is not a medical condition where the choice is “the baby or mom, whom do you save?”.

Doctors have to try to save both patients. Sometimes one may be lost, but, direct abortion, direct killing of either mother or child is always a grave evil.

Exactly what happened when my Fallopian tube ruptured from an ectopic, the damaged tube is removed. With our technology today that means that the child will die, however, we cannot directly kill the child with medication.

The mothers life being in danger has been a long standing way for those who are for abortion to get someone who is prolife to say they are for abortion. The only problem is that there is very little evidence that any abortion would ever save a woman’s life. In Ireland, abortion is still illegal, there are not many dead mom’s there and in fact Irelands health care service is well known for it’s high quality.

Abortion and Double Effect ; Matthew A.C. Newsome ; Catholic Answers Magazine

Excerpt:
" Cases in which a pregnancy may threaten the life of the mother are extremely rare. Former U.S. surgeon general C. Everett Koop has famously stated:

‘In my thirty-six years of pediatric surgery I have never known of one instance where the child had to be aborted to save the mother’s life. . . . If toward the end of the pregnancy complications arise that threaten the mother’s health, [her obstetrician] will either induce labor or perform a Caesarian section. His intention is to save the life of both the mother and the baby. . . . The baby’s life is never willfully destroyed because the mother’s life is in danger.’ (Moody Monthly, May 1980)."

They don’t have to try to save both, though. If the mother’s life is on the line, she may very well choose to go ahead with an abortion. As long as it is legal in the jurisdiction, the doctor may proceed with the abortion. Of course this isn’t aligned with church teaching. Just clarifying.

No, the Church has never said such a thing. This is a false argument made by abortion advocates. Pregnancy can cause health issues, but direct abortion of the child is never the correct medical treatment, and never morally correct.

It might not be the intendede outcome. But it is the knowable outcome. So how is that different ? That’s like saying masturbation is wrong and I can’t enjoy it but have to do it to stop wet dreams or problems lack of masturbation. Whatever they might be IDK but I have heard people say they exist. So they believe.

Sounds like a false Christian like Nancy Pelosi would say something like that. Knowing the eposcopy teaches otherwise.

Thank you for the clarification! I didn’t realize the Church taught that. Definitely important to know

In the United States, as long as a woman or her next of kin refuses an abortion, the physicians must respect her wishes.

OK so this action can be done if there is no other way I am assuming, there is NO way to save the fetus. Then it is a side effect. ok.
