Abortion Supporters State Ultrasounds Would Cost $700. Then Why Are Crisis Pregnancy Centers Doing Them for FREE?

I support the requirement for ultrasounds before abortion so the women can see that it’s a baby they carry.

What’s confusing in this discussion is that some posts above seem to imply that not doing an ultrasound places the woman’s health at risk.

What basis is there for assuming that an abortion done without an ultrasound is medically unsafe for the mother? Are we confusing two issues here?
The basis for that is that women have been persuaded that the unborn child is “simply a blob of tissue,” and so on. Later, when they find the reality – that the child had a beating heart, for example – they are stricken with remorse, and their mental health suffers.

I agree with what Vern said but I think it also has to do with making sure that all of the torn apart body parts  are removed so that the mother doesn’t begin to hemorrhage which could cost her life if not found in time…

She had an abortion and regrets it. Sometimes I feel helpless and sometimes I feel that I don’t say the right thing. 😦
The guilt is a good sign because it means that her heart is still open to the Holy Spirit. My husband worked with a woman who was very anti male who announced one day that she had an abortion and felt no shame or pain over her decision.

Your friend needs to know that she can grieve for her unborn child. Let her know that you are there for her. Just expressing grief is probably very, very helpful for her. Its not an event that she will ever completely get over or stop feeling guilt over. But over time her pain will become more bearable.

There is also counseling available for women who have abortions that might be helpful.

Is your friend a Christian? If so at least she has the comfort of knowing that she can come to God and get forgiveness.

But are we sure that all women who have abortions need such ultrasounds? I know people who have had early miscarriages who had no ultrasounds after the pregnancy was removed. If we are going to say that failing to do ultrasounds in every case is failing to give proper medical care, we need to have a scientific basis for that opinion.

I think we need to remember that a miscarriage is very different than an abortion. An abortion is the dismemberment of the child and in the dismembering of the child parts of the body could be missed which could be hard to find if the ultrasound is not used.

In the case of abortion, failing to give an ultrasound is failure to obtain informed consent. Frankly, abortion providers lie to their patients, and only by allowing the patient to see for herself can we say she was fully informed.

You are correct. In seems that in all other cases, the medical community bends over backwards to make certain that as many facts as possible regarding a procedure are made known to the patient beforehand. Sadly, the proabortion crowd has taken the stance “The less information, the better,” when it comes to abortion and influenced the medical community to follow suit.

The proaborts know the reality: more ultrsounds = less abortion. Challenge them with this position when they speak of the so-called “middle ground” of “reducing the number of abortion.”

Sadly, just a few months ago the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled a person seeking an abortion is not entitled to be fully informed.

Not at all. An early abortion and an early miscarriage are often handled in exactly the same manner, something many pro-lifers often don’t seem to appreciate. The only significant difference is that in one case the baby is alive and in the other it is dead. In both cases the uterus is emptied of it’s contents in one of a variety of ways: there simply isn’t a single procedure (note I didn’t say medication) that is used only to perform abortions and nothing else.

I’m all for letting a mom see that it’s a real baby she carries. All I’m saying is that no one here has provided a scientific basis for stating that not doing an ultrasound after an abortion always puts a woman’s health at risk. Let’s not play fast and loose with the facts.

Not asking a patient if they had any allergies before prescribing a drug would not always put the patient’s life at risk.

Not asking a patient what drugs they were already taking before prescribing a drug would not always put the patient’s life at risk.

Not asking a patient if they had any metal in their bodies before prescribing an MRI would not always put the patient’s life at risk.

But deliberately lying to a prospective abortion patient can put the patient’s mental health at risk.

Now we’re back to ultrasound before an abortion so the mom can know it’s a baby she carries. Why don’t we just stick to that argument, since it’s a reasonable and likely effective measure? It’s important to thresh out these subtleties now and not in a discussion with the opposite side. One of the characteristics of those I’ve been in contact with is that today’s pro-choicer is scientifically well-informed. Hence the need to get our facts straight.

Rather an untrasound before an abortion so mom can be fully informed and know what she’s doing – for the sake of her future mental health.

Then they are just tremendous liars (as opposed to just sincerely misinformed), which makes them even more dispicable, as they continue trying to peddle that “blob of tissue” and “we don’t know when life begins” nonsense at everyone (women in crisis pregnancies, pro-lifers, politicians, Supreme Court Justices, etc.), when anyone can go to any ob/gyn’s office and pick up a copy of “As Your Baby Grows” and see the truth.

In Christ,

Ellen

During a miscarriage the body is working naturally to expel the baby, during an abortion the physician starts the whole process.

I have known women who have had early miscarriages who did have ultrasounds afterwards and those that didn’t. Just recently I had a friend who had a early miscarriage. She did not have a ultrasound afterwards but she did have a follow up with her physician, who knew that she was miscarriage. Just curious, are women who have abortions advised to see their physicians afterwards to ensure that everything went as planned?

I would think that to err on the side of caution in such a controversial procedure would be just common sense.

I know that I have had three early miscarriages the first and last one was very clean, my babies were delivered completely. But the second one was not so clean, I am not all that sure what happened, but I had a lot of bleeding for almost a whole year, it was a very terrible and painful (physically- because they were all very painful mentally) miscarriage. I did have an ultrasound on the second one and the first one. The last one, I didn’t really have to do anything medically with him.

God bless you, Saint Lucy.
Thank you. He sure has blessed me, although He has granted me the grace and ability to have two of His children with me here on earth, He is also granting me and my family our own personal league of saints in heaven who I know are always praying for us. I love and think of my little saints every day.

I have three aunts who died at birth or were still-born and one (an adopted foundling) who drowned at the age of 9. I often think of them in heaven.

Are you wondering about a specific time period for the abortion? Wouldn’t you agree that the need for the abortionist to use an ultrasound increases as the pre-born human’s gestational age increases?

I thought an ultrasound before and after a D&C was standard for miscarriages past the 1st or 2nd month. Seeing as how the most common age for abortion is between 8-12 weeks, wouldn’t this be wise?

Also, are you referring to an actual D&C, or just a spontaneous abortion? It’s the surgical procedure that, IMO, requires an ultrasound. Those cannulas can scar, tear or fully rip open the uterus and if a D&C was required, then body parts could still be in the uterus.

I’m just saying that if the intent of requesting mandatory ultrasounds is to facilitate full disclosure, I’m all for it.

The question of whether an ultrasound is necessary to safeguard physical health is a medical decision to be made by those so qualified.
