I am in a debate in where I am trying to prove abortion is evil

I would like to know the reasoning that lead the Universal Magisterium to decree that all abortion is evil, and that life begins at conception.

Life begins at conception, but even before that, God has a plan for us.

Most importantly is that Jesus was alive from the moment he was conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Some Biblical references:

Psalms 139:13-16 [New American]
You formed my inmost being;
You knit me in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, so wonderfully you made me;
Wonderful are your works!
My very self you knew;
My bones were not hidden from you,
When I was being made in secret,
Fashioned as in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes foresaw my actions;
In your book all are written down;
My days were shaped, before one came to be.

Isaiah 49:1 “Yahweh called me when I was in the womb,
before my birth he had pronounced my name.”

Jeremiah 1:5
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.”

BTW if the person you are debating still doesn’t see why it’s evil. Type in abortion in google image search and show them the slaughter and murder that they don’t believe is evil.

Male sperm if it does not fertilize, simply dies.
The female egg if not fertilized dies.
Unless killed or aborted a fertilized egg keeps inevitably growing, a person is born

In the case of women who become pregnant as a result of rape, faithful Catholics argue several things:
  1. The infant itself has the right to life as it is a human being from conception.
  2. Abortion is murder and therefore wrong.
    3)The woman herself if ‘given’ an abortion is further victimised as many (most?) women who have had an abortion deeply mourn their lost child and regret the abortion.
  3. A child born as the result fo sexual violence may be the ‘good’ that comes out of suffering. This may be either with his/her own mother or with an adoptive family.
Hope this helps

There’s a very recent thread in the Apologetics section (or maybe Philosophy), on page 2 of the thread titles. It’s called “Life at Conception?” and was started by Morgo. It will have a lot of the arguments you are looking for.

The Church says life begins at conception because it is a scientific fact that life begins at conception. To assert otherwise is irrational.

I would like to know the reasoning that lead the Universal Magisterium to decree that all abortion is evil, and that life begins at conception.
The Church Teaching:

Abortion

CCC 2270 Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.
Code:
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.

My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the earth.
CCC 2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law:
Code:
You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish.

God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes.
CCC 2272 Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. “A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae,” "by the very commission of the offense,"and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law. The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society.

CCC 2273 The inalienable right to life of every innocent human individual is a constitutive element of a civil society and its legislation:

“The inalienable rights of the person must be recognized and respected by civil society and the political authority. These human rights depend neither on single individuals nor on parents; nor do they represent a concession made by society and the state; they belong to human nature and are inherent in the person by virtue of the creative act from which the person took his origin. Among such fundamental rights one should mention in this regard every human being’s right to life and physical integrity from the moment of conception until death.”

“The moment a positive law deprives a category of human beings of the protection which civil legislation ought to accord them, the state is denying the equality of all before the law. When the state does not place its power at the service of the rights of each citizen, and in particular of the more vulnerable, the very foundations of a state based on law are undermined. . . . As a consequence of the respect and protection which must be ensured for the unborn child from the moment of conception, the law must provide appropriate penal sanctions for every deliberate violation of the child’s rights.”

CCC 2274 Since it must be treated from conception as a person, the embryo must be defended in its integrity, cared for, and healed, as far as possible, like any other human being.

Prenatal diagnosis is morally licit, “if it respects the life and integrity of the embryo and the human fetus and is directed toward its safe guarding or healing as an individual. . . . It is gravely opposed to the moral law when this is done with the thought of possibly inducing an abortion, depending upon the results: a diagnosis must not be the equivalent of a death sentence.”

CCC 2275 “One must hold as licit procedures carried out on the human embryo which respect the life and integrity of the embryo and do not involve disproportionate risks for it, but are directed toward its healing the improvement of its condition of health, or its individual survival.”

“It is immoral to produce human embryos intended for exploitation as disposable biological material.”

“Certain attempts to influence chromosomic or genetic inheritance are not therapeutic but are aimed at producing human beings selected according to sex or other predetermined qualities. Such manipulations are contrary to the personal dignity of the human being and his integrity and identity” which are unique and unrepeatable.

Also consider this from Wisdom 12:5-6 (Douay-Rheims Challoner text). It includes not just abortion but those already born

And those merciless murderers of their own children, and eaters of men’s bowels, and devourers of blood from the midst of thy consecration, And those parents sacrificing with their own hands helpless souls, it was thy will to destroy by the hands of our parents,

5 “From the midst of thy consecration”… Literally, sacrament. That is, the land sacred to thee, in which thy temple was to be established, and man’s redemption to be wrought.

Also in the Didache (teachings of the Apostles) written around 70AD to 100AD.

Chapter 2. The Second Commandment: Grave Sin Forbidden. And the second commandment of the Teaching; You shall not commit murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not commit pederasty, you shall not commit fornication, you shall not steal, you shall not practice magic, you shall not practice witchcraft, you shall not murder a child by abortion nor kill that which is born. You shall not covet the things of your neighbor, you shall not swear, you shall not bear false witness, you shall not speak evil, you shall bear no grudge. You shall not be double-minded nor double-tongued, for to be double-tongued is a snare of death. Your speech shall not be false, nor empty, but fulfilled by deed. You shall not be covetous, nor rapacious, nor a hypocrite, nor evil disposed, nor haughty. You shall not take evil counsel against your neighbor. You shall not hate any man; but some you shall reprove, and concerning some you shall pray, and some you shall love more than your own life.

but when you put abortion into law, doesn’t it prevent people from free will. doesn’t god want to judge us. and if we allow pro-life laws then this hence is against doctrine. and since people have free-will this will cause people to break the law? hence that it would be illegal. my friend and i debated abortion. i by the way hate abortion fyi 😉 😛

Why does it affect free will. Just because abortion is legal does not mean a woman must have an abortion.

true, but if you put it into law then people will still want to get an abortion which will encourage lawlessness.

Having laws encourages lawlessness; therefore, we ought to get rid of all laws and let people do whatever they want, because that would make things better.

:rolleyes:

you can also show that access to abortion leads to eugenics such as how in the UK over 90% of babies diagnosed in utero with downs syndrome are aborted.
