I have to write a report for my “Pope Pius” award. I chose the subject of abortion. I have to put up the church’s stand on it. I know abortion is totaly unacceptable for all reasons, can anyone give me a reason why? Scripture, Church tradition, etc. can all help me out a lot! Thanks a ton guys! (and gals)

P.S. I don’t mean to bring up the debate on abortion, abortion = bad, accept it

*“Thou Shall Not Kill.” Abortion is murder. Pretty cut and dry. *
 
All human beings are made in the image of God. (See Genesis 1 or 2).
It is murder to kill a human being. (See Exodous 20).
The Catholic Church says that abortion is so bad that anyone who’s had one is automatically excommunicated, and has to be absolved by a bishop.

It’s murder if somebody whacks a pregnant woman in the stomach and kills her baby.
It’s murder if somebody kills a minute-old baby.

It’s legal to give a woman an abortion in the last 3 months of her pregnancy.

Basically there are four differences between a newborn baby (or any other human) and an unborn one (I saw this in a video somewhere…sorry, can’t remember).

SLED:
Size: an unborn baby is usually smaller than a newborn. But are tall people more human than short ones? Are fat people more human than skinny people? Are big people more human than little people? More deserving of life? Of course not!

Lack of Development: fetuses are less developed than newborns. Is 3 year old girl less human than 30 year old woman because her reproducitve system isn’t fully developed yet? Do 30 year olds deserve to live more than toddlers? Of course not!

Environment: fetuses are in the womb, newborn babies are out of the womb. But am I more human because I’m inside and you’re outside? Do people in Tokyo deserve to live more than people in Czechleslovakia? (sp?) Of course not!

Dependency: babies in utero are dependent on their mothers for oxygen and food. But are diabetic people who depend on regular insulin injections to survive less human than non-diabetic people? Does one group have more of a right to live? Of course not!

I would focus on the science. By focus on the science, I don’t mean focus on it more than theology, but throw it in there. Remember that a fetus is scientifically human.

Focus on when life begins. Sperm contains life, so does the egg. When they get together we mean something different with the term “life.” Life is not univocal. Spend time on what constitutes human life.

I would argue from a philosophical point of view: the merging of the sperm and the egg creates the substantial form of human-ness. Just because it cannot do the things humans can do, its natural telos is toward being human.

When writing about abortion I must challenge you. Everyone seems to have an opinion about this and as such we can do a lot of research that only serves to support our own pre-concieved idea of what is right. If your position is right, it can withstand the best attacks of the other side.

I don’t have a catechism on me, but there’s plenty on line you can look up.

Basically, the church states that life begins at conception and at that point there is a soul. Secondly, this life is a human person and abortion, stem cell research and IVF are counter to the dignity of the human person. Abortion is gravely disordered because it damages the intimate relationships in the human family.

But the Church offers hope, healing and forgiveness to women who abort and thus excommunicate themselves. They can return home if they do so with a repentant heart.

Beware of the wolves in sheep’s clothing, the group “catholics” for a free choice, they claim to be Catholics but support abortion and birth control, thus, they are ignoring a very important teaching and are placing themselves and others in danger of mortal sin.

The Fifth Commandment: You shall not kill.

Abortion is murder.

Also:

CCC 2258 “Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being.”

Also:

The Didache (teachings of the Apostles written around 75AD to 100AD):
Although not part of the Bible, the Church references The Didache in the CCC on some issues.

From the Didache:

Chapter 2. The Second Commandment: Grave Sin Forbidden. And the second commandment of the Teaching; You shall not commit murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not commit pederasty, you shall not commit fornication, you shall not steal, you shall not practice magic, you shall not practice witchcraft, **you shall not murder a child by abortion **nor kill that which is born. You shall not covet the things of your neighbor, you shall not swear, you shall not bear false witness, you shall not speak evil, you shall bear no grudge. You shall not be double-minded nor double-tongued, for to be double-tongued is a snare of death. Your speech shall not be false, nor empty, but fulfilled by deed. You shall not be covetous, nor rapacious, nor a hypocrite, nor evil disposed, nor haughty. You shall not take evil counsel against your neighbor. You shall not hate any man; but some you shall reprove, and concerning some you shall pray, and some you shall love more than your own life.
