Abortion?

If having an abortion and/or helping someone to procure an abortion, why aren’t people excommunicated for plain ol’ “I don’t want you around and have decided to chop you to bits” murder? (or for just your “garden variety” murder?)

Or can you?
 
I’m sorry but I don’t really understand your question. Abortion is wrong and the Church teaches against it. I do wonder why people even call themselves Catholic when they are for the killing of innocent pre-born children. Several politicians come to mind who claim to be Catholic but are pro-choice.
Right now I’m even more astonished that anyone can permit the killing of these precious children. My newest granddaughter was just born two days ago and holding her in my arms and kissing her precious face was just so special!

Forgive me but I cannot understand your question. Can you what? All murder is grave matter and is potentially mortal sin, whatever the “variety”. When a person is in the state of mortal sin they essentially excommunicated themselves as they can no longer receive the Eucharist nor benefit from the graces of any Sacrament except Reconciliation whereby one is reunited with God and His Church…🤷
 
The OP was asking why murder of adults is not an excommunicable offence, since abortion is. TeachCCD, I think you’re on the right track pointing out that murder of adults is very potentially a mortal sin, and so is pretty well the same thing.
In my opinion, it is a pastoral decision. Since abortion is legal in most places, we have to fight harder against that than against murder of adults.
To clarify a bit more, abortion is excommunicable latae sententiae, but murder of adults could be excommunicable ferendae sententiae.

Here’s hoping the coding works…

It is because it is so much more disordered and grave. A mother and or father killing their own child. Turning the womb into a death chamber, does it get more disordered than that?

Why wouldn’t a mother be excommunicated for killing her newborn immediately after birth? For instance, in cases where the child is found in a dumpster.

That is specific and abortion is general. You can’t outline every specific reason.
