Abortionist Morganthaler to get honorary doctorate: please sign petition against!

The University of Western Ontario is going to award Dr Henry Morgenthaler an honorary doctorate for his work in ‘normalizing’ abortion. Please sign the following petition asking that this decision be rescinded:

Please also circulate this petition to all pro-lifers that you know.

Please also ask your bishop to comment publicly against Morganthaler’s honorary doctorate.

It might also be worthwhile emailing the Vatican and asking them for a public comment.

should I not sign because of this and just contact the bishops?
 
I have been advised of a notice which has appeared on the petition webpage, to wit:

To all our American and non-Canadian friends: while we appreciate your thought, and know there are millions south of our border who are sympathetic to our situation, **unless you are alumni or students of the University of Western Ontario, or Canadian taxpayers, your names will not help us. **

This is utter nonsense. I have written to the administrators of the petition objecting in very clear terms to their isolationist policy. To wit,
  1. The academic community is an international community;
  2. Abortion is an international issue;
  3. Catholics are an international community;
  4. Catholics learned during the Terri Schiavo struggle how much clout we had; people were emailing the Governor, the President, the bishops, the senators, the house reps, the coroner’s office, the Papal Nuncio, the Vatican and many other people from all over the world. We are not going to stop fighting for the lives of the unborn just because of provincial timidity;
  5. Having only Canadian signatures on the petition is not going to impress Canadian politicians one iota because Canadian politicians couldn’t care less.
  6. The option is for me to ask everyone I know to stop signing the petition and to write a second letter to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops asking them to comment on UWO’s isolationism on a Catholic (universal) issue.

Ha! I see that signatures have come in from all over the US, Europe, Australia, Brazil, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, and even Hong Kong. Good.
 
Thanks Ani for bringing this to light. Does anyone know if there is an organization like the Catholic League for Canada??? I would like to cite two other reason for the introduction of US petitioners. The vast amount of foreign Canadian Tourist Dollars come from US, and American taxpayers dollars and military protect Canadad like most of the world. Thanks again and God Bless.

  1. Yes, the tourist dollar angle is good. Very good.
I wouldn’t bring up the military angle, though. The military angle is perfectly valid, but people are ‘funny’ up here, particularly academics.

Here are some more good angles:
  1. Some of the students at University of Western Ontario are American and their families are American.
  2. Many Canadians are living abroad. How can they tell if someone signing from the U.S. or from Indonesia is not Canadian?
I would sign anyway. There are plenty of foreign signatures on there anyway. I signed everything that was up for signing on the Terri Schiavo case in the States. I got used to it. What can they do?

I just reckon we Catholics have to start writing our own international agenda instead of constantly letting non-Catholics yank us around.

**CCRL encourages Western alumni to stop donating **

TORONTO, March 23, 2005 – The Catholic Civil Rights League (www.ccrl.ca) today expressed its deep regret that the University of Western Ontario is granting an honorary degree to Henry Morgentaler. The London, Ont. university recently announced that the honorees at this year’s Spring convocation ceremonies will include Morgentaler, calling him “a humanist leader who has promoted the idea that people have a right to control their own sexuality and reproduction, without interference by the state.”

The league criticized the choice in an open letter to Western President and Vice Chancellor Paul Davenport. “This man’s sole contribution to Canada has been the taking of life in unprecedented numbers,” said Joanne McGarry, executive director of the league and a Western graduate. “The widespread, unrestricted access to abortion that he has championed is nothing to be proud of, and has been extremely controversial and divisive every step of the way.

“Assuming the views of your alumni reflect those of the Canadian population, at least two-thirds of us do not think unrestricted abortion access is a public good. I will be encouraging all alumni to stop donating to Western, as I will, as long as this award is granted,” said Ms. McGarry. “I urge you to reconsider this decision.”

I have to say that I think that the more signatures, the better…I am just south of Lake Ontario here…There is a lot of travel across the lake, esp with the new ferry going back into business. It seems to me that tourist dollars ought to mean something, even if the :mad: (non)ethics of this don’t!!!
