Nobody is making any money on those songs by posting them on youtube, are they? It seems to me that those copyright laws are there to keep people from making money on other people’s works without asking permission - like if you were to put together a poetry anthology and not ask the authors’ permission to use their writings.
I think the video’s are actually more like free advertising for the artists. If someone hears a really good song on youtube, they are more likely to go out and buy the CD or download it onto their MP3 player than to just keep going to the same video online to hear it.

I’m not sure about the copyright issues. Artists can always ask Youtube to remove copyrighted material, and often they do; youtube complies with such requests.
As for making money, Youtube is making big money from essentially free content supplied by its viewers! A good deal if you can get it.

I don’t think it is ok to listen to those songs if you know you should spend money and buy it.

The only violation of copyrights is by the person who performs and records someone elses material, and offers it to the general public without explicit permission to do so.
For example, if I post a video on youtube of myself performing a James Taylor song without permission, I’m the one guilty of copyright infringement.
Anyone who views and listens to the video has done nothing wrong.
Now, if I post a song off a James Taylor CD (The actual artist recording) on the net for free download, both myself and anyone who downloads it are guilty of copyright infringement. That is theft pure and simple, and is a huge problem of late.

What if the person who listens and views the video knows fully well that the video is copyrighted. Let’s not talk about the civil laws, but about spirituality, how should this person do in this case - ignore the copyright and view the video?

If you know they have the permission to do so, then you are ok to watch. If you know they don’t, then it is better not to watch; you are giving me more motivation to do it illegally. If you don’t know if they have permission or not, it’s better to leave and not watch the video.
