About Hell - Should I have said this?

Greetings brothers and sisters in Christ!

I’d like your opinion on something I said in a group setting, in regards to Heaven and Hell. I stated that

“no one is going to go to Hell kicking and screaming. Those that are going to hell have CHOSEN to go there and could care less about God”

Was I wrong to say that? Is that statement consistent with historical Christian thought in regards to those that are (may be) in hell?

Perhaps you could have said that the people in hell chose to be there. I see where you were going with your statement. I have often said, “satan didn’t fall, he jumped.” But, I also think that though they choose whether to follow God or sin, that once they are on that path to hell, they won’t be happy about it. I do think there might be some kicking and screaming if they had any sense left about them. Don’t you?

I don’t think you meant anything against church teaching by your words or if you did, at least now you have concern over them which is the right step anyway. Right?

Another point might be that souls don’t end up in hell “on accident”.
 
It may not be the most theologically precise articulation, but I think that it is relatively sound from a pedagogical standpoint.
 
You may have pointed out that Satan blinds people to the gospel and that people who are decieved end up going there and it is our Job to plant the seeds of heaven, water them through living the life and prayer and harvesting them when they are ready to come to Jesus.
 
Sounds about right to me actually. I think CS Lewis kind of held this view; one of his books has a character called the Ghost who drives past Heaven or something or other- can’t remember but either way… I think its right what you said!

May I respectfully point out that the phrase is “could not care less”. Hope you don’t think I’m being pedantic!🙂
And I pretty much agree with your sentiments. We all freely choose to either follow Him or not.

Dear friend,perhaps You could have choose the words a bit better,but in the other hand,You made it pretty clear what You wanted to say. Do You know why God gave us a short memorie in some things? Right guess. All is well and You don’t need to be worry.
 
There was a recent cartoon in the Curt Jester. A [generic] “personally opposed but” politician is standing at Heaven’s Gate. A voice from above is saying, “I am personally opposed to your going to Hell, but I won’t interfere with your choice,” and a trapdoor is opening under the politician’s feet. :eek:

A damned soul would find God’s love unbearable. Hell shades him from that burning love that he never learned to accept.

I LOVE that spin on the old “catholic” politician standby on their stance on abortion. Just great!

By the way it is my firm belief that Hell exists BECAUSE of God’s love for His creatures…He loves us so much and respects our choice to follow Him and join Him in Heaven or Reject Him and go to Hell which is the only place where He turns aside His face. The choice was given to the angels too. He loves us too much to just destroy us for rejecting Him. So unrepentant sinners choose to, during their lives to turn from Him so he allows them to stay that way…forever. Hell is optional. Hell is a choice.
